REDEVELPOMENT AUTHORITY

The State College Borough Redevelopment Authority will meet today at noon in the downtown municipal building. Action is planned on draft updates for the Homestead Investment Program. Borough staff will also provide a brief report on progress of the Downtown Master Plan. As always, the public is encouraged to attend.

Trucker Loses Load Of Steel To Thief

BARKEYVILLE – An ambitious thief gets away with a huge amount of steel in Barkeyville.  Rangu Sing Gurpeet, a 50-year-old trucker from Mercer, had his entire load of 40-foot structural steel beams stolen, along with the Trailstar flatbed trailer he was hauling them in.

Police tell us this occurred some time between March 30th and the present date as Gurpeet’s vehicle was parked near Freightliner truck repair.

The loss is estimated at 27-thousand dollars.

SAFE DIGGING

Columbia Gas is urging Pennsylvania residents to call 811 to check for underground utilities before planting new trees or plants this spring. The service aims to protect both utilities and those digging. The free call connects homeowners and contractors with the Pennsylvania One Call System. According to a release, the network sends professional locators to the digging site within three days to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags and spray pain. Columbia officials say an underground utility line is damaged every six minutes.

Homeowner Chases Off Burglar

CAMBRIDGE TWP. – Police are trying to track down an apparent home invader, chased off by the homeowner.  It happened on Friday at a house on Route 19 near Cambridge Springs, the home of 50-year-old Kathy Gosik.  State Police say a man described as white and in his late 30’s or early 40’s entered Gosik’s home without permission and attempted to use her telephone.  When Gosik heard the commotion, she found the perpetrator in her bedroom.  At that point police say she escorted the intruder out of the house.

Police say the man was clean shaven, had sandy brown hair, and was wearing camouflage pants with a matching long sleeve shirt and hat.

Anyone with information about the man’s identity is asked to call State Police in Meadville at 814-332-6911.

BODY FOUND IN CAMBRIA COUNTY

STATE POLICE SAY THE BODY OF 30 YEAR OLD AMANDA SHERRY-GRIFFON OF NORTHERN CAMBRIA WAS FOUND IN THE WOODS ALONG GRACE STREET JUST BEFORE 8 SATURDAY NIGHT. CAMBRIA COUNTY CORONER DENNIS KWIATKOWSKI HAS RULED THE DEATH SUSPICIOUS, BUT HE CAN’T SAY HOW LONG THE BODY WAS THERE BEFORE THE PROPERTY OWNER DISCOVERED IT. AN AUTOPSY IS SCHEDULED THIS MORNING.

DEADLY BIKE WRECK

AN 85 YEAR OLD MAN DIED SATURDAY AFTER A BICYCLE CRASH IN STATE COLLEGE. POLICE SAY DUANE OLSON LOST CONTROL OF HIS BIKE AND WRECKED ALONG ROLLING RIDGE DRIVE IN COLLEGE TOWNSHIP. OLSON HIT A FENCE AND A WALL AND LATER DIED.

Curb and sidewalk repairs in the 200 block of South Buckhout Street in State College are scheduled to continue this week. Folks traveling through the area should use extra caution. Work is scheduled Monday-Friday between 7:30 am and 5 pm.
