A K-9 officer with Titusville’s police department has died. Chief Gary Thomas says Kai, a 9-year-old German Shepherd from Czechoslovakia, was humanely put down after being rushed to the Titusville Veterinary Clinic with a sudden illness Wednesday:
"He had a tumor hidden behind his spleen. It was unable to be seen with normal X-rays. It had burst, and there was nothing that could be done," Thomas says.
Kai is remembered as a standout crime fighter:
"During the meth craze, he was a real crime fighter. He came in and alerted us to a lot of drugs."
Police say in his eight years of service, Kai and Officer Pete Peterson had numerous drug arrests, as well as assisting in locating and apprehending several fugitives. Formal arrangements for a memorial service have yet to be made.
