MEADVILLE — The City of Meadville is relinquishing its authority to inspect retail food facilities. City Council last night voted four to one to turn that job over to the State Department of Agriculture. Supporters said this will free up city staff for other responsibilities, even though the city will lose out on a small amount of revenue.
Councilman LeRoy Stearns said city health officer Gary Johnson has always done a good job with inspections, but he thinks his time would be better spent on other functions.
Councilman John Battaglia was the dissenting votes. He said the state will not do as good a job as the city’s own workers.
