VERNON TWP. – Meadville Medical Center on Thursday unveiled plans for a brand new development in Vernon Township. The sprawling 44 acre lot surrounding K-Mart on the Conneaut Lake Road will be turned into what hospital officials are calling “Vernon Place.” The first phase of the project, expected to be complete in 2015, will house the new location of the Meadville Family YMCA, Orthopedic Associates of Meadville, speech and occupational therapy, and state of the art Meadville Medical Center radiology and diagnostic imaging labs, says Anne White, Vice President of Rehabilitation and Outpatient Services.
Beyond the first phase, officials are hoping to branch out to include more than just medical services. Restaurants, retail shops, retirement homes, and other businesses will be brought on board as the project moves forward, turning the whole area into a kind of Vernon Township community center.
Since Meadville Medical Center and its subsidiaries are tax-exempt, the township will collect no real estate tax on those parts of the complex that are run by the hospital. However, all of the commercial portions of the development will of course pay taxes.
