The Farmer’s Market is voluntarily recalling blends of pre-packaged lettuce due to possible Listeria contamination. River Ranch Fresh Foods recalled seven salad varieties Friday and added another six blends over the weekend. Affected packages have expiration dates ranging from May 12th to May 29th. Giant Eagle carries the Farmer’s Market brand.
Listeria is caused by several varieties of bacteria of the genus, Listeria. The infection is most prevalent in the elderly, pregnant mothers, and AIDS patients. It is a serious illness that can result in meningitis and has a mortality rate of about 20 percent. It gets its name from the English surgeon Joseph Lister, a pioneer of sterile surgery after whom the mouthwash Listerine was named.
