WEST MEAD TWP. -- An elderly Meadville area man died in a house fire this morning. Meadville firefighters pulled the body of 82-year-old Robert Irwin from his home at 20050 Gill Street, in West Mead Township.
West Mead #1 Rescue Chief Jayme Corey says Meadville Central arrived on scene first.
"They got here first and made an interior breach into the house out of the window, on what we call the B side of the structure. Unfortunately, he was deceased."
The fire was discovered by Irwin's stepdaughter, Patsy Irwin, who saw smoke coming from a window when she went to check on him this morning.
Rescue Chief Corey says Meadville Central always responds first on entrapment calls.
"We always have Meadville Central -- the paid department -- come originally when there is entrapment, because they are a paid department and they are always on call."
Crawford County 911 reports firefighters from West Mead 1, West Mead 2, Meadville Central, Vernon Township, Vernon Central, Saegertown, Cochranton and East Mead responded. Conneaut Lake and Hayfield were on standby.
Toxicology and carbon monoxide tests are pending on the body. A State Police fire marshal is investigating the cause.
