Zippo manufactured its 500 millionth lighter Tuesday. The Bradford-based company marked the occasion with a special ceremony.
The lighter was passed hand-to-hand among all 620 of Zippo’s employees, with CEO Greg Booth putting the finishing touches on the assembly. Then owner George Duke lit it, and it was placed in the Zippo museum next door to the factory.
Coincidentally, yesterday also happened to be the birthday of the late George Blaisdell, Zippo's founder, who died in 1978. Zippo has been making the distinctive metal-encased lighters since 1932.
