MEADVILLE – Murders in Crawford County…. The topic of a book by Conneaut Lake native Don Hilton. It’s called “Murder, Mysteries and History of Crawford County, Pennsylvania 1800-1956.”
“I started with the birth of the county and ended with the birth of me,” Hilton says.
The book opens with the first thoroughly documented killing in the county, the 1817 murder of Hugh Fitzpatrick by Spartansburg area man George Speth Van Holland, and includes more than a hundred real-life murders and unsolved killings. Vics, suspects, perps. Judges and juries. Jails and penitentiaries. Hangings, electrocutions and nothing less than simply getting away with murder.
“Human beings have improved over the years, but as far as I can tell, we are pretty much the same as we were 20-thousand years ago. If you are up on local news and you read this book, you’ll say, ‘Oh, I recognize that story.’”
A book signing is to be held this Saturday at the Conneaut Lake Area Historical Society from 2 to 5pm. Copies are also available at the public libraries of Meadville, Titusville and Conneaut Lake.
