THE ALTOONA AREA SCHOOL BOARD VOTED LAST NIGHT TO closE Wright and Washington -Jefferson Elementary schools. district administrators saY enrollment IS DOWN AND THEY COULD SAVE UP TO 1-POINT-5 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR. THE PLAN IS TO RE-ALIGN ATTENDANCE TO BALANCE OUT CLASS SIZE THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT. OFFICIALS SAY THEY DO NOT EXPECT ANY EMPLOYEE FURLOUGHS.

SOME RESIDENTS OF BROAD AVENUE IN ALTOONA WERE LIVID WHEN A PENNDOT CONTRACTOR TRIMMED TREES IN THE PROTECTED DISTRICT RECENTLY. YESTERDAY, A PENN STATE ARBORIST WALKED THROUGH THE AREA WITH CITY AND PENNDOT OFFICIALS. TOM FORD TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR 44 OF THE TREES SHOULD BE REMOVED AFTER THE PRUNING, BUT MANY OF THEM PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN CUT DOWN ANYWAY DUE TO FLAWS INSIDE THE TREES…SOME OF THE FLAWS CAUSED BY PRIOR IMPROPER PRUNING. MEETINGS CONTINUE TODAY AS OFFICIALS TRY TO RESOLVE THE SITUATION.

A 15-year-old boy was killed YESTERDAY WHEN he was shot with an air rifle in Porter Township, Clinton County. state police at Lamar SAY the boy was pronounced dead at Lock Haven Hospital. An autopsy is pending, but the death is not considered suspicious.

a bedford county juRY HAS BEEN SEATED FOR THE INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER TRIAL OF 52 YEAR OLD RANDY FOOR OF BEDFORD. HE ORIGINALLY pleaded guilty TO SHOVING HIS FRIEND, 49 YEAR OLD DENNIS SPRIGG OF MANNS CHOICE, DURING AN AUGUST PARTY WHEN BOTH HAD BEEN DRINKING HEAVILY. SPRIGG FELL AND HIT HIS HEAD ON THE SIDEWALK. HE DIED 7 WEEKS LATER. THE JUDGE ALLOWED FOOR TO WITHDRAW HIS PLEA AND TESTIMONY IS SET TO BEGIN NEXT WEDNESDAY. THE DEFENSE COULD TRY TO CONVINCE THE JURY IT WAS A CASE OF SELF-DEFENSE.
