22 YEAR OLD ARMY SENIOR COMBAT MEDIC Adam Hartswick OF PINE GROVE MILLS LOST BOTH LEGS IN AN EXPLOSION IN AFGHANISTAN BACK IN MAY, BUT HE PLANS TO ridE in the 4th Fest Parade of Heroes TOMORROW IN STATE COLLEGE. DOCTORS AT Walter Reed National Military Medical Center HAVE CLEARED HARTSWICK TO MAKE THE TRIP. The Parade of Heroes BEGINS AT 2PM AND will honor 14 local individuals who were selected for their service to the community. The heroes include military veterans, EMTs and  volunteers.

A LOCAL HERO IS BEING HONORED FOLLOWING HIS DEATH. GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT HAS SIGNED LEGISLATION TO RE-NAME THE BRIDGE THAT CARRIES STATE ROUTE 45 OVER THE LITTLE JUNIATA RIVER IN SPRUCE CREEK IN HONOR OF U-S ARMY SERGEATN FIRST CLASS SIDNEY HAMER WHO DIED IN 2011 AT THE AGE OF 78. DURING HIS 20 YEAR MILITARY CAREER, HAMER WAS AWARDED 17 RIBBONS AND MEDALS, INCLUDING THE BRONZE STAR. HE SERVED IN SOUTH KOREA AND VIETNAM.

STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL KATHLEEN KANE ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT SHE WILL NOT FORMALLY OBJECT TO THE MERGER BETWEEN ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM AND UPMC…BUT SHE WILL REQUIRE UPMC TO MAKE A DEAL WITH HIGHMARK SO ITS SUBSCRIBERS CAN RECEIVE CARE AT THE FACILITY. UPMC DOESN’T PLAN TO EXTEND ITS CONTRACtURAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIGHMARK IN THE PITTSBURGH AREA AFTER NEXT YEAR, BUT THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT THE ORGANIZATION PLANS TO SEEK A REASONABLE SPECIAL CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH HIGHMARK FOR ACCESS TO ALTOONA, BECAUSE ALTOONA IS A SOLE COMMUNITY PROVIDER. blair county’s unemployment rate fell one-tenth of one percent to stand at 6-point-9 in may. bedford county dropped from 9-point-6 to 9-point-2. cambria and centre county fell one-tenth to 8-point-9 and 5-point-7. huntingdon and clearfield county declined 2-tenths to 9-percent and 8-point-4. the statewide jobless rate is down one-tenth to 7-point-5, but the national number rose one tenth to 7-point-6.

A CAMBRIA COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED A former Harmony Area music teacher TO 2 CONCURRENT 1 TO 2 YEAR PRISON TERMS for sexually molesting a 15-year-old boy last year. UNDER THE PLEA AGREEMENT, 28 YEAR OLD Shane Putorek ALSO PLEADED GUILTY TO POSSESSION OF CHILD pornography. Putorek will BE ON probation FOR 7 YEARS and MUST register as a sex offender.

A CENTRE COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED Zachariah Johnson OF BOALSBURG TO 5-AND-A-HALF TO 11 YEARS IN PRISON…and Joseph Jenkins OF BELLEFONTE TO 3-AND-A-HALF TO 7 YEARS ON ROBBERY AND ASSAULT CHARGES. On July 10TH OF 2011, tHEY approached a maN outside a house party in State College and jumped him. They beat him and took his money and cell phone, leaving him bloodied on the ground. HE IS STILL RECOVERING.

IN Pennsylvania, ONLY SPARKLERS AND SMOKE BOMBS ARE LEGAL FIREWORKS…NOTHING THAT leaves the ground or makes a VERY loud noise…AND NOW the Logan Township Police DEPARTMENT IS CRACKING DOWN.
THIS WEEK, OFFICERS CHECKED FIREWORKS sales tents throughout THE ALTOONA AREA to make sure illegal fireworks were nOt being sold under the table. THEY DID NOT CITE ANYONE FOR VIOLATIONS. HOWEVER, IN BLAIRSVILLE, INDIANA COUNTY - Undercover state TROOPERS seized MORE THAN 30-THOUSAND DOLLARS in illegal fireworks from Big Ed’s Outlet ON MONDAY. Charges are pending against the operator. Last year nationally more than 87-HUNDRED people were hospitalized FOR fireworks related injuries.
