IRAQ WAR VETERAN NICHOLAS HORNER OF ALTOONA IS SERVING A LIFE SENTENCE FOR KILLING SCOTT GARLICK AT THE 58TH STREET SUBWAY RESTAURANT IN APRIL OF 2009…WOUNDING A FEMALE EMPLOYEE…THEN KILLING RAYMOND WILLIAMS NEARBY…NOW HORNER has decided to end all of his legal appeals. Paperwork filed with the STATE Superior Court this week SAYS Horner will not pursue any additional legal appeals. HIS ATTORNEY, TOM DICKEY, ARGUED BEFORE THE JURY THAT HORNER WAS SUFFERING FROM POST TRAUMATIC STRESS AFTER SEVERAL TOURS IN WAR ZONES.

A Johnstown FAMILY CALLS JASON RIPLEY a hero AFTER HE RAN into a burning home MONDAY NIGHT AND saveD 3 CHILDREN trapped upstairs AT CAMBRIA PLACE AND 6TH AVENUE. AUTHORITIES SAY RIPLEY WAS SWIMMING IN THE HOME’S POOL WHEN HIS GIRLFRIEND NOTICED SMOKE. THE KIDS’ FATHER ALSO RAN INSIDE AND GOT THEM OUT SAFELY. ACCORDING TO FIRE OFFICIALS, THE FIRE WAS ELECTRICAL AND STARTED IN THE KITCHEN. the property was insured, BUT THE FAMILY DID NOT HAVE RENTER’S INSURANCE.

NO JAIL TIME FOR CHOP SHOPPER

the altoona mirror reports that 65 year old john kollar of hastings was sentenced by a cambria county judge yesterday to spend 6 to 23 months on house arrest. he pleaded guilty to operating a chop shop. kollar’s son, brad, was also charged in the case, but he committed suicide in march when he drove his car loaded with explosives into a house in clearfield township. a man and his teenage son were injured.

ELDERLY MAN KILLED

AN INDIANA COUNTY MAN DIED IN A WRECK TUESDAY AFTERNOON. THE CORONER SAYS 83 YEAR OLD ROBERT PENROD OF Brush Valley was NORTHBOUND ON Route 259 in Brush Valley Township WHEN his car crossed into the opposite lane and struck a pickup driven by 70 YEAR OLD Clayton Libengood of Penn Run. Libengood was treated at a LOCAL hospital.

State Representative Scott Conklin OF CENTRE COUNTY holds a public forum tonight to talk about HIS IDEAS FOR REFORMING Penn State’s Board of Trustees. the public hearing IS SET FOR 7 pm in the State College Boro building. Conklin SAYS THE series of bills HE INTRODUCED in the state House WoULD increase accountability and transparency from the university.”

The head of the Penn State University Board of Trustees says some key findings of the Freeh Report are "speculation."  Keith Masser made that claim in a "USA Today" report published yesterday. HE added that the school is following through on some recommendations made by the Freeh report but says he'll let "the courts decide" on cover-up allegations involving JOE Paterno and other PSU officials. Trustee Keith Eckel, who is also quoted in the "USA Today" article, told "PennLive" that the board never accepted the Freeh Report as fact.

COWS WERE STARVED

IN CENTRE COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, 56 YEAR OLD THOMAS SHAWLEY OF MILESBURG WAS SENTENCED TO 19 TO 57 MONTHS IN JAIL. SHAWLEY WAS convicted on 19 counts of animal cruelty for starving his herd of cattle and not properly disposing of dead cattle. In February, the Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania S-P-C-A found 32 starving beef cows on HIS Burnside Township farm.

Today's national average price for regular unleaded is $3.63…15 cents more expensive than one week ago and 24 cents higher than the same day last year. The national average has now increased for 9 days in a row.
