DANGEROUS CARBON MONOXIDE

IN THE JOHNSTOWN-AREA, A CHRYSLER AVENUE COUPLE AND THEIR DOG ARE LUCKY TO BE ALIVE AFTER CARBON MONOXIDE LEVELS IN THEIR HOME ROSE NEARLY 40 TIMES HIGHER THAN WHAT’S CONSIDERED SAFE. WJAC REPORTS THE WOMAN WHO LIVED THERE CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT YESTERDAY BECAUSE SHE AND HER HUSBAND HAD HEADACHES AND WERE FEELING LETHARGIC. THE WOMAN MADE IT OUT, BUT FIRE CREWS HAD TO HELP HER HUSBAND. THEIR DOG WAS UNCONSCIOUS AND WAS GIVEN OXYGEN. THEY ARE ALL DOING FINE NOW. OFFICIALS SAY FUMES WERE COMING FROM THE FURNACE COMBINED WITH A DRAFT FROM THE HOT WATER TANK.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

A PORTION OF THE PATERNO FAMILY’S LAWSUIT AGAINST THE NCAA IS MOVING FORWARD AFTER A JUDGE IN CENTRE COUNTY RULED THAT SEVERAL CLAIMS HAVE LEGAL MERIT AND CAN PROCEED. THE JUDGE DID NOT ELIMINATE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST THE NCAA INCLUDING CONSPIRACY WITH FORMER FBI DIRECTOR LOUIS FREEH…POTENTIAL DEFAMATION AGAINST THE PATERNOS, UNIVERSITY BOARD MEMBERS AND FORMER COACHES…AND THE CONSENT DECREE’S PORTRAYAL FOR JOE PATERNO. ATTORNEYS EXPECT THE PROCESS TO UNVEIL ADDITIONAL INFORMATION THROUGH DEPOSITIONS WITH INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED IN THE SANDUSKY SCANDAL’S AFTERMATH.

FORMER PENN STATE PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER ATTENDED A HEARING IN CENTRE COUNTY COURT TUESDAY HOPING TO DELAY HIS DEFAMATION CASE AGAINST FORMER FBI DIRECTOR LOUIS FREEH UNTIL THE CRIMINAL CASE IS RESOLVED AGAINST SPANIER, TIM CURLEY, AND GARY SCHULTZ. THE JUDGE DID NOT MAKE A RULING YET. FREEH’S ATTORNEY SAYS THE COURT SHOULD NOT DELAY THE MATTER AND HE WANTS SPANIER TO FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT AND GIVE SPECIFIC DEFAMATION ALLEGATIONS, INSTEAD OF ONLY FILING AN INTENT TO SUE.

JERRY SANDUSKY TESTIFIED VIA VIDEO CONFERENCE YESTERDAY AND HE’S HOPING HIS CANCELLED RETIREMENT BENEFITS WILL BE RESTORED. ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, SANDUSKY FOCUSED ON CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING HIS RETIREMENT FROM PENN STATE AND LINKS BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY AND HIS SECOND MILE CHARITY. THE STATE CLAIMS SANDUSKY CONTINUED TO RECEIVE PAYMENTS FROM PENN STATE AFTER HE RETIRED IN 1999, BUT HE CLAIMS HE NEVER GOT ANY W-2’S. IT COULD BE MONTHS UNTIL THE CASE IS RESOLVED.

NEW COACH?

PENN STATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS DAVE JOYNER SAYS HE’S PLEASED WITH THE PROGRESS IN THE SEARCH FOR THE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH. A STATEMENT RELEASED YESTERDAY SAYS, “WE ARE ON SCHEDULE AND I ANTICIPATE HAVING THE NEW HEAD COACH IN PLACE IN A MATTER OF DAYS.” A REPORT YESTERDAY INDICATED THAT VANDERBILT HEAD COACH JAMES FRANKLIN IS THE CURRENT FRONTRUNNER. IINTERIM HEAD COACH LARRY JOHNSON ALSO REPORTEDLY INTERVIEWED YESTERDAY.

HIGHER GAS PRICES

IT’S A NEW YEAR AND PENNSYLVANIA HAS A HIGHER GAS TAX SO YOU’VE PROBABLY NOTICED THAT WE’RE PAYING MORE AT THE PUMP. TRIPLE A FUEL GAUGE SAYS WESTERN PA GAS PRICES ROSE 9 CENTS TO AN AVERAGE OF $3.54 THIS WEEK…AND IN THE ALTOONA AREA, THE AVERAGE IS $3.59. TODAY’S NATIONAL AVERAGE IS $3.31…A FRACTION OF A PENNY LESS THAN ONE WEEK AGO, 5 CENTS MORE THAN ONE MONTH AGO AND 2 CENTS MORE THAN THE SAME DATE LAST YEAR.
