CHARGES FILED IN FATAL WRECK

POLICE IN CAMBRIA COUNTY HAVE CHARGED 20 YEAR OLD ZETH MARKEL OF BEAVERDALE WITH VEHICULAR HOMCIDE AND DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE FOR THE NOVEMBER CRASH THAT KILLED HIS PASSENGER, 21 YEAR LYLE POPISH ALSO OF BEAVERDALE. POPISH WAS EJECTED WHEN MARKEL’S S-U-V STRUCK AN EMBANKMENT ALONG ROUTE 53, BECAME AIRBORNE, AND PARTIALLY ROLLED OVER. MARKEL’S BLOOD ALCOHOL WAS POINT-13 PERCENT. HE’S IN THE COUNTY JAIL.

STUDENT INJURED

HOLLIDAYSBURG POLICE SAY A SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WAS STRUCK BY ANOTHER STUDENT’S S-U-V AS HE WALKED HOME YESTERAY AFTERNOON. THE PEDESTRIAN SUFFERED LEG INJURIES. AFTER HITTING HIM, THE VEHICLE NARROWLY MISSED A BUS FULL OF STUDENTS…THEN SLID INTO A DITCH. THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS WEREN’T INJURED. ALSO YESTERDAY, A BUS CARRYING HOLLIDAYSBURG STUDENTS WAS INVOLVED IN A MINOR ACCIDENT ON ROUTE 764. NO ONE WAS HURT.

PENN STATE STUDENT WAS HIGH

THE CENTRE COUNTY CORONER SAYS 20 YEAR OLD CONOR MACMANNIS HAD MARIJUANA, SYNTHETIC LSD, AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL IN HIS SYSTEM WHEN HE FELL TO HIS DEATH FROM A 9TH-FLOOR BALCONY OF PENN TOWERS IN STATE COLLEGE THE MORNING OF NOVEMBER 16TH. RIGHT AFTER THAT, STATE COLLEGE POLICE ISSUED A NOTICE ABOUT POSSIBLE PSYCHEDELIC AND SYNTHETIC DRUGS THAT WERE BEING FOUND IN THE AREA.

LONG SENTENCE FOR KILLER

A CAMBRIA COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED GREGORY CONZO TO 15 TO 40 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON FOR THE BLUDGEONING DEATH OF 37 YEAR OLD MICHAEL PCOLA OF BEAVERDALE. POLICE SAY CONZO STRUCK PCOLA IN THE HEAD WITH AN ALUMINUM BASEBALL BAT ON NOVEMBER 5TH OF 2012. PCOLA DIED 2 DAYS LATER. THE ATTACK HAPPENED THE NIGHT BEFORE CONZO WAS TO BE SENTENCED FOR ASSAULTING PCOLA’S MOTHER, CONZO’S GIRLFRIEND. CONZO PLEADED GUILTY TO 3RD DEGREE MURDER.

REMEMBERING JOE-PA

TODAY MARKS THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF PENN STATE’S LEGENDARY FOOTBALL COACH JOE PATERNO…AND THE NON-PROFIT GROUP INSPIRATION WAY WILL HOLD A CANDLELIGHT VIGIL AT 7PM AT THE SUZANNE POHLAND PATERNO CATHOLIC STUDENT FAITH CENTER ON PARK AVENUE IN STATE COLLEGE. ORGANIZERS WILL LIGHT 409 CANDLES AND THEY ARE ASKING THE PUBLIC TO WRITE QUOTES OR PERSONAL STORIES ABOUT PATERNO FOR THE LUMINARY BAGS. THE PATERNO FAMILY HAS REQUESTED THAT DONATIONS BE MADE TO THE DANCE MARATHON IN JOE-PA’S NAME.

BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ARE THINKING ABOUT A REASSESSMENT…AND YESTERDAY THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THEY AGREED TO SPEND 7-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO HIRE THE PITTSBURGH FIRM WEISS, BURKARDT, AND KRAMER L-L-C TO STUDY THE ASSESSED VALUES OF SOME RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES AND DETAIL INEQUITIES IN THEIR REAL ESTATE TAXES. THE STUDY WILL TAKE UP TO 6 WEEKS. BLAIR COUNTY HASN’T REASSESSED SINCE 1958.
