SANDUSKY SCANDAL

THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT Penn State has settled with 25 men WHO claim they were abused by Jerry Sandusky. LAWYER MICHAEL ROZEN says theIR claims were vetted and the university went to “great lengths to verify and corroborate the stories” told by the men. Penn State has authorized 60 million DOLLARS for the settlements. THERE ARE 6 REMAINING claimants AND Rozen saYS he expectS one to settle, and one may file a lawsuit. Another has ALREADY filed a suit in federal court. ROZEN SAYS The last 3 have not provided any “credible evidence” to support their claims.

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, AN EAST TAYLOR TOWNSHIP POLICE OFFICER TESTIFIED THAT 38 YEAR OLD BRIAN ROLES SENIOR ADMITTED HE WAS DRIVING WHEN HIS PICKUP CRASHED ALONG ROUTE 271 LAST YEAR, KILLING HIS 16 YEAR OLD SON, BRIAN JUNIOR. THE COP SAYS Roles WAS visibly drunk. ANOTHER OFFICER TOLD THE JURY ROLES asked, “Did I kill my son?” while being taken for a blood test AT THE HOSPITAL. Roles IS charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence OF ALCOHOL AND PRESCRIPTION DRUGS. EARLIER THIS WEEK, THE DEFENSE CLAIMED THE TEENAGER WAS BEHIND THE WHEEL.

NEW TRIAL FOR CONVICTED KILLER?

PAUL AARON ROSS OF HOLLIDAYSBURG WAS CONVICTED IN THE 2004 RAPE AND MURDER OF TINA MILLER OF HOLLIDAYSBURG, BUT HE HAS BEEN GRANTED A new trial. District Attorney RICH CONSIGLIO IS SENDING PAPERWORK OBJECTING TO A NEW TRIAL TO THE STATE Superior Court. HE SAYS THE FIRST TRIAL WAS PROPERLY HANDLED. Defense Attorney Tom Dickey CONVINCED THE HIGHER COURT THAT he didn’t have ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE. The superior court MAY NOT rulE FOR months.

STORE CLERK PEPPERSPRAYED

BELLEFONTE Police are looking for THE robber WHO HIT CENTRE MART CONVENIENCE STORE AROUND 10:30 MONDAY NIGHT. HE SPRAYED THE CLERK WITH PEPPER SPRAY, GRABBED the CASH REGISTER, AND FLED. A PELLET GUN WAS FOUND NEARBY, BUT HE DID NOT DISPLAY THE WEAPON DURING THE HOLDUP. THE SUSPECT IS A BLACK MAN WITH REDDISH HAIR. HE HAS stars shaved or died into his hair. anyone wITH INFORMATION SHOULD call POLICE at 353-23-20.

BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS TOLD THE ALTOONA MIRROR YESTERDAY THE COUNTY HAS LAID OFF 4 EMPLOYEES AS A RESULT OF UNION “BUMPING” THAT WENT INTO EFFECT AFTER THE SALE OF VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME. THE NEW OWNER OFFERED 241 WORKERS JOBS. Some DECIDED TO RETIRE. AND OTHERS TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A PROCEDURE BETWEEN THE UNION AND THE COUNTY TO BUMP WORKERS IN THE HIGHWAY AND MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT. THOSE WHO WERE LAID OFF WILL HAVE FIRST CHANCE  AT BEING RE-HIRED WHEN VACANCIES  BECOME AVAILABLE.

local unemployment rates for july are out today. the department of labor and industry says blair county’s number held steady at 6-point-8-percent. clearfield and huntingdon counties were also the same at 8-point-4 and 9-point-5. bedford and cambria county dropped one-tenth to 9-point-1 and 8-point-7. centre county’s jobless rate rose one-tenth to 5-point-9 percent.
