FATAL ACCIDENTS

AN EVERETT MAN DIED MONDAY WHILE WORKING AT A CONSTRUCTION SITE IN URSINA, SOMERSET COUNTY. AUTHORITIES SAY 32 YEAR OLD JARED RITCHEY WAS PINNED BENEATH A LARGE CONCRETE MANHOLE FORM THAT BECAME DISLODGED WHILE THE CREW WAS WORKING ON IT. CO-WORKERS FREED RITCHEY, BUT WERE UNABLE TO REVIVE HIM. AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY.

A DEADLY CRASH EARLY YESTERDAY IN JACKSON TOWNSHIP, CAMBRIA COUNTY. THE CORONER'S OFFICE SAYS 21 YEAR OLD RYAN KINLEY OF MINERAL POINT WAS KILLED WHEN HIS CAR CRASHED INTO A TREE ALONG ADAMS AVENUE. KINLEY'S BLOOD ALCOHOL CONTENT WAS MORE THAN TWICE THE LEGAL LIMIT. SPEED WAS ALSO A FACTOR.

SCHOOL STABBER’S HEARING POSTPONED

THE PRELIMINARY HEARING FOR 16-YEAR ALEX HRIBAL HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL JUNE 4TH. HE’S ACCUSED OF WOUNDING 20 STUDENTS AND A SECURITY GUARD DURING A STABBING RAMPAGE AT FRANKLIN REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN MURRYSVILLE LAST MONTH. HIS ATTORNEY REQUESTED THE SECOND DELAY. HRIBAL IS BEING CHARGED AS AN ADULT BUT HIS LAWYER SAYS HE WILL ASK FOR THE CHARGES TO BE MOVED TO JUVENILE COURT.

SEPARATE TRIALS?

20 YEAR OLD HUGO BAEZ OF NEW YORK IS CHARGED WITH MURDER IN THE HALLOWEEN NIGHT SHOOTING DEATH OF WILLIE SOLOMON AT CHOICES NIGHTCLUB IN ALTOONA…AND 24 YEAR OLD BRANDON MIDDER OF ALTOONA IS FACING AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AND VARIOUS OTHER CHARGES. THEIR ATTORNEYS HAVE REQUESTED SEPARATE TRIALS AND BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE ELIZABETH DOYLE HELD A HEARING YESTERDAY TO REVIEW SECURITY VIDEO FROM THE NIGHTCLUB. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS SHE ASKED BOTH SIDES TO PROVIDE HER WITH TRANSCRIPTS FROM BOTH MEN’S PRELIMINARY HEARINGS…AND SHE WILL THEN SCHEDULE ANOTHER COURT DATE.

OFFICIALS SAY BOALSBURG CEMETERY DAMAGES WILL TOP 100-THOUSAND DOLLARS AFTER SOMEONE KNOCKED OVER AND DAMAGED MORE THAN 50 HEADSTONES OVER THE WEEKEND. BOALSBURG IS KNOWN AS THE BIRTHPLACE OF MEMORIAL DAY AND MANY OF THE STONES ARE IRREPLACEABLE, DATING BACK TO THE 18-HUNDRED. ALTOONA DRUG BUSTS

STATE AND LOCAL AGENTS ROUNDED UP 9 SUSPECTED STREET LEVEL DRUG DEALERS IN THE ALTOONA AREA MONDAY. STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL KATHLEEN KANE SAYS THE CHARGES FOLLOW A YEAR-LONG INVESTIGATION. THE SUSPECTS ARE ACCUSED OF DISTRIBUTING HEROIN AND PRESCRIPTION NARCOTICS. PRELIMINARY HEARINGS ARE SCHEDULED NEXT TUESDAY.

3 PEOPLE ARE IN THE BLAIR COUNTY JAIL AFTER POLICE FOUND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF HEROIN AT A 4TH AVENUE APARTMENT ON SUNDAY. COPS TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR THEY SPOTTED JORDON HAVLIN AND ZAKKARY MANNARINO IN THE FRONT SEAT OF AMANDA IVORY’S CAR WHICH REEKED OF MARIJUANA AND THERE WAS HEROIN OUT IN THE OPEN. IVORY, WHO IS MANNARINO’S GIRLFRIEND, GAVE POLICE PERMISSION TO SEARCH HER APARTMENT AND THEY SEIZED MORE THAN 10 GRAMS OF HEROIN, OVER 18-HUNDRED DOLLARS IN CASH, AND VARIOUS DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. PRELIMINARY HEARINGS ARE SCHEDULED NEXT WEDNESDAY.

SCHOOL DISTRICTS WORKING ON BUDGETS

THE ALTOONA SCHOOL DISTRICT LAST NIGHT GAVE PRELIMINARY APPROVAL TO A 96-POINT-3 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET FOR THE COMING YEAR. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS IT CALLS FOR NO TAX INCREASE, BUT A 12-MILLION DOLLAR INCREASE IN SPENDING. SUPERINTENDENT TOM OTTO SAYS IT’S A WORST-CASE SCENARIO BUDGET AND HE EXPECTS ACTUAL SPENDING TO BE LESS THAN IS FORECAST IN THIS PROPOSAL. OFFICIALS ARE STILL WAITING FOR A STATE BUDGET.

THE STATE COLLEGE AREA SCHOOL BOARD LAST NIGHT UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED A PROPOSED FINAL BUDGET FOR THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR THAT INCLUDES A 1-POINT-95 PERCENT TAX INCREASE. THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES SAYS THE NEXT STEP IS A BUDGET HEARING AT 7PM ON MONDAY, JUNE 2ND, WITH THE FINAL BUDGET SCHEDULED TO BE PRESENTED FOR ADOPTION ON JUNE 9TH. THE TAX INCREASE WOULD BE THE DISTRICT’S SECOND-LOWEST SINCE THE 1998-1999 SCHOOL YEAR.
