2 FIRES/ONE DEADLY

A DEADLY FIRE BROKE OUT JUST AFTER 4 MONDAY MORNING AT A 200 YEAR OLD LOG CABIN ON PROPERTY OWNED BY MILLER’S QUALITY RECYCLING IN BEDFORD TOWNSHIP. THE VICTIM’S NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED, BUT AUTHORITIES SAY HE DIED AS THE RESULT OF SMOKE INHALATION. THE CAUSE OF THE BLAZE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

A SPACE HEATER IS BEING BLAMED FOR A FIRE THAT BROKE OUT MONDAY MORNING IN LOWER YODER TOWNSHIP, NEAR JOHNSTOWN. IT HAPPENED IN THE 12-HUNDRED BLOCK OF MARYLAND AVENUE AND FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO QUICKLY PUT OUT THE FLAMES. ONE PERSON LIVING IN THE HOME WENT TO THE HOSPITAL WITH SMOKE INHALATION. FIREFIGHTERS URGE EVERYONE TO USE CAUTION WITH ALTERNATIVE HEATING SOURCES.

FATAL CRASH UPDATES

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT MONDAY, 47 YEAR OLD TODD MUMMERT OF SALIX PLEADED GUILTY TO INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER AND DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL IN CONNECTION WITH A FATAL CRASH IN JULY OF LAST YEAR. MUMMERT FAILED TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION OF ROUTE 219 AND ELTON ROAD IN RICHLAND TOWNSHIP AND HIS CAR COLLIDED WITH A MOTORCYCLE DRIVEN BY 47 YEAR OLD BRYON MCDERMOTT OF JOHNSTOWN, WHO WAS KILLED. MUMMERT WILL BE SENTENCED JANUARY 13TH.

A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED TODAY FOR 18 YEAR OLD SUSAN SCHEZZINI OF ALTOONA WHO IS FACING HOMICIDE BY VEHICLE AND OTHER CHARGES. BACK IN JULY, HER CAR CRASHED INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE ON KETTLE ROAD IN TYRONE TOWNSHIP, KILLING HER BACKSEAT PASSENGER, 18 YEAR OLD JORDAN DODSON OF ALTOONA. 2 FEMALE PASSENGERS WERE ALSO HURT. THE OTHER DRIVER, 26 YEAR OLD KAYLEE HARPER OF TYRONE, SUFFERED A FOOT INJURY, BUT HER YOUNG SONS WERE IN CARSEATS AND ESCAPED INJURY. POLICE SAY SCHEZZINI WAS SPEEDING AND DRIVING RECKLESSLY.

2 INJURED

22 YEAR OLD ALEXANDER STOLFO OF ILLINOIS SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES IN A CRASH MONDAY ALONG I-99 IN GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY STOLFO’S CAR RAN OFF THE HIGHWAY AND ROLLED OVER SEVERAL TIMES. FIREFIGHTERS FREED HIM FROM THE WRECKAGE AND HE WAS TAKEN TO UPMC ALTOONA. A PASSENGER, 18 YEAR OLD JOSEPH PLATT OF PITTSBURGH, HAD JUST MINOR INJURIES.

PREPARING FOR MURDER TRIAL

GREGORY CONZO OF BEAVERDALE IS AWAITING HIS MURDER TRIAL IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT…AND A JUDGE RULED MONDAY THAT THE PROSECUTION WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SHOW THE JURY PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY POLICE RE-ENACTING THE ALLEGED MURDER OF MICHAEL PCOLA LATE LAST YEAR. POLICE SAY CONZO ATTACKED HIS GIRLFREIND’S SON WITH A BASEBALL BAT AND PCOLA DIED 2 DAYS LATER. JURY SELECTION IS SET FOR JANUARY 14TH. CONZO REMAINS IN THE COUNTY PRISON WITHOUT BAIL.

FORMER COACH GETS JAIL TIME

FORMER ALTOONA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS ASSISTANT SOCCER COACH KYLA HOLLINGSHEAD APPEARED IN COURT MONDAY AND PLEADED GUILTY TO HAVING A SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH 2 TEENAGE GIRLS. SHE WAS SENTENCED TO AT LEAST 60 DAYS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON FOLLOWED BY PROBATION.

STUDENTS ARRESTED FOR GRAFFITTI

STATE COLLEGE POLICE HAVE CHARGED 2 PENN STATE STUDENTS WITH SPRAYPAINTING ANTI-SEMETIC SLOGANS AND SEXUAL IMAGES ON CARS AND BUILDINGS OUTSIDE A PREDOMINATELY JEWISH FRATERNITY LAST MONTH. 19 YEAR-OLD ERIC HYLAND OF EXPORT PA AND 19 YEAR-OLD HAYDEN GROM OF CONNECTICUT ARE CHARGED WITH ETHNIC INTIMIDATION, CRIMINAL MISCHIEF, AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT. POLICE SAY MOST OF THE GRAFFITI WAS DIRECTED TOWARD BETA SIGMA BETA. THE MEN…WHO SAY THEY WERE INTOXICATED…HAVE CONFESSED AND BEEN EXPELLED FROM THE ACACIA FRATERNITY. THEY WILL ALSO FACE A DISCIPLINARY HEARING BEFORE THE OFFICE OF STUDENT CONDUCT.

UNION CONTRACTS FOR ALTOONA WORKERS

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT ALTOONA CITY COUNCIL HELD A SPECIAL MEETING LAST NIGHT AND APPROVED NEW UNION CONTRACTS FOR POLICE AND NON-UNIFORMED WORKERS. THE AGREEMENT FREEZES WAGES AND SETS OTHER RESTRICTIONS AS OUTLINED IN THE CITY’S ACT 47 DISTRESS RECOVERY PLAN. COUNCILMAN BRUCE KELLEY SAYS HE COMPLIMENTS THE UNIONS FOR REALLY SUCKING IT UP AND BEING A BIG PART OF THE SOLUTION.

PENELEC NEGOTIATIONS FAIL

ABOUT 140 PENELEC WORKERS WERE LOCKED OUT OF THEIR JOBS NOVEMBER 25TH…AND THEY KEEP PICKETING OUTSIDE FIRSTENERGY CORPORATION LOCATIONS IN ALTOONA AND THE SURROUNDING AREA. FIRSTENERGY SPOKESMAN SCOTT SURGEONER SAYS NEGOTIATIONS FAILED AGAIN MONDAY AFTER ONLY A 20 MINUTE PRELIMINARY MEETING AND 5 MINUTES AT THE BARGAINING TABLE. THE MEETING WAS SET UP BY A MEDIATOR.
