THE EVIDENCE IS NOW BEING ANALYZED. Police STARTED COMBING THE PROPERTY ALMOST 2 WEEKS AGO AFTER RECORDING A PHONE CONVERSATION THAT INCLUDED KENNETH LEIGHTY OF ALTOONA CONFESSING TO ACCIDENTALLY KILLING HIS DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AND BURYING HER BODY. 23 YEAR OLD Sherry Leighty went missing IN 1999. Huntingdon County District Attorney GEORGE ZANIC says HE’S confident that POLICE Are close to making an arrest.

higher taxes in altoona?

TAXES MAY BE GOING UP IN ALTOONA. ITY MANAGER JOE WEAKLAND YESTERDAY INTRODUCED A 5-YEAR, 9-POINT-4 MILLION DOLLAR CAPITAL SPENDING PLAN THAT WOULD RAISE PROPERTY TAXES BY 2-POINT-5 MILLS. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT THE PLAN WILL HAVE TO BE APPROVED BY THE CITY’S ACT 47 COORDINATOR AND THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BEFORE CITY COUNCIL APPROVES IT.

MANAGING CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE

state game commission executive director carl roe says a second deer management area has been established as officials try to contain chronic wasting disease. the area covers over 900 square miles in blair, bedford, cambria, and huntingdon counties. it changes laws, regulations, and restrictions related to free-ranging deer and elk. hunters and private landowners should be advised there is now a ban on urine-based attractants and direct and indirect feeding of wild deer.

CONTROLLED GAMELANDS BURN

AT 10 THIS MORNING, the Game Commission IS SCHEDULED TO begin a controlled burn on the Scotia Barrens of State Game Land 176 in Patton, Ferguson and Halfmoon townships in Centre County. Motorists may notice smoke traveling from the burn site toward the Stormstown and possibly Port Matilda areas.
