SEIU HEALTHCARE REJECTED THE HOSPITAL’S LAST, BEST, AND FINAL OFFER…AND NOW THE UNION SAYS HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT ASKED TO RE-START TALKS. UPMC ALTOONA SPOKESMAN DAVE CUZZOLINA SAYS THE HOSPITAL SEES THIS AS A FAVORABLE STEP, BUT REMAINS PREPARED FOR ALL CONTINGENCIES. NURSES SAY THE MAJOR ISSUES ARE STAFFING, HEALTHCARE COSTS, AND RETIREMENT BENEFITS.

CINDY SONG DISAPPEARANCE

IT’S BEEN MORE THAN 12 YEARS SINCE PENN STATE STUDENT CINDY SONG DISAPPEARED FROM STATE COLLEGE…NOW THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT THE BADLY DESTROYED REMAINS OF 12 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FOUND ON THE LUZERNE COUNTY PROPERTY OF CONVICTED BANK ROBBER HUGO SELENSKI. A FORMER CO-DEFENDANT OF SELENSKI’S HAD PREVIOUSLY TOLD AUTHORITIES THAT HE PICKED UP A WOMAN MATCHING SONG’S DESCRIPTION IN STATE COLLEGE, KIDNAPPED HER, AND KILLED HER. THE INFORMANT LED POLICE TO THE LOCATIONS OF 5 BODIES IN 2003, BUT DNA PROVED NONE OF THEM WERE SONG. A GRAND JURY INDICTMENT OUT THIS WEEK SAYS 12 BODIES WERE ACTUALLY DISCOVERED. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

PENN STATE KIDNAPPING

PENN STATE POLICE HAVE BEEFED UP SECURITY AFTER A FEMALE STUDENT REPORTED THAT A GROUP OF MEN GRABBED HER OVER THE WEEKEND AND TRIED TO INDECENTLY ASSAULT HER. THE WOMAN DIDN’T REPORT THE ATTACK UNTIL 2 DAYS LATER. POLICE ARE LOOKING AT SURVEILLANCE VIDEO FROM THE AREA AND TALKING TO OTHERS WHO WERE IN THE AREA AT THE TIME. CENTRE COUNTY CRIMESTOPPERS IS OFFERING A REWARD OF UP TO 1-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO AN ARREST.

SHOOTER IDENTIFIED

JOHNSTOWN POLICE SAY 20 YEAR OLD EARL MITCHELL JUNIOR OF PHILADELPHIA IS THE MAN WHO KILLED JAREEK ADAMS LAST SATURDAY NEAR THE OAKHURST HOME. A SECOND VICTIM, JONATHAN MOORE, WAS ALSO SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE HEAD, NECK AND LEG, BUT HE HAS SINCE BEEN RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL. MOORE TOLD POLICE, HE AND ADAMS WERE TALKING TO A GROUP OF PEOPLE IN A CAR WHEN MITCHELL JUST OPENED FIRE. U.S. MARSHALS IN JOHNSTOWN AND PHILADELPHIA ARE ASSISTING IN THE SEARCH FOR MITCHELL. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON HIS WHEREABOUTS IS ASKED TO CALL 1-800-281-16-80.

OUT OF COUNTY JURY FOR RE-TRIAL?

BLAIR COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY RICH CONSIGLIO HAS DECIDED TO SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY IN PAUL AARON ROSS’S RE-TRIAL FOR THE MURDER OF TINA MILLER AT CANOE CREEK STATE PARK BACK IN 2004…AND NOW ROSS’S ATTORNEY, TOM DICKEY, TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR HE MAY TRY TO GET AN OUT OF COUNTY JURY. ROSS WAS ORIGINALLY SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON, BUT THE STATE SUPERIOR COURT GRANTED HIM A NEW TRAIL, SAYING HIS LAWYER WASN’T GIVEN ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE AND TESTIMONY BY ROSS’S FORMER GIRLFRIENDS SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN ALLOWED.

TREE-TRIMMER FALLS

STATE COLLEGE POLICE SAY A 21-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS SERIOUSLY HURT AFTER HE FELL 40 FEET, FACE FIRST-FIRST TO THE GROUND WEDNESDAY MORNING. HE WAS TRIMMING TREE LIMBS ALONG THE 11-HUNDRED BLOCK OF SMITHFIELD CIRCLE WHEN THE LIMB HE WAS ON SUDDENLY BROKE AND HIS CHAINSAW CUT HIS SAFETY LINE. THE VICTIM WAS TREATED AT MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER, THEN FLOWN TO A TRAUMA CENTER IN THE AREA.

SCHOOL BOMB THREAT UNFOUNDED

PART OF HOLLIDAYSBURG SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL WAS EVACUATED WEDNESDAY MORNING AFTER A STUDENT MADE A BOMB THREAT. SUPERINTENDENT ROBERT GILDEA SAYS THE THREAT WAS FOUND TO BE UNSUBSTANTIATED AND NOTHING WAS FOUND DURING A SEARCH. ACCORDING TO ADMINISTRATORS, THE STUDENT RESPONSIBLE CLAIMS IT WAS JUST A JOKE.

EXPULSION HEARING FOR VO-TECH STUDENT

AN EXPULSION HEARING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED MONDAY FOR THE 16 YEAR OLD ADMIRAL PEARY VO-TECH STUDENT WHO BROUGHT A LOADED 9 MILLIMETER HANDGUN TO THE CAMBRIA TOWNSHIP SCHOOL LAST FRIDAY. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THE TEEN WAS AUTOMATICALLY SUSPENDED FOR 10 DAYS. HE TOLD ADMINSTRATORS HE WAS CARRYING THE GUN FOR FEAR OF BEING ATTACKED BY ANOTHER STUDENT AFTER SCHOOL.

HOCKEY PLAYER & LIFE SAVER

PENN STATE SOPHOMORE HOCKEY PLAYER DAVID GLEN IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE OFF THE ICE. HE COMPLETED A 5-DAY BLOOD STEM CELL DONATION PROCESS YESTERDAY TO PROVIDE CELLS FOR A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT. THE ALBERTA CANADA-NATIVE’S DONATION GOES TO A WOMAN IN HER 50’S WHO IS BATTLING CANCER. GLEN LEARNED HER WAS A MATCH AFTER A DRIVE ON CAMPUS SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL “BE THE MATCH” ORGANIZATION IN SUPPORT OF A PENN STATE LACROSSE PLAYER’S MOTHER. GLEN WILL MISS ABOUT 2 WEEKS OF ACTION ON THE ICE.
