BLAST IN ALTOONA

A MAN AND WOMAN SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES YESTERDAY WHEN A FLASH EXPLOSION OCCURRED AT THEIR 2ND STREET HOME. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR THE COUPLE HAD JUST MOVED IN AND THEY WERE TRYING TO LIGHT THE FURNACE. THERE WAS NO OBVIOUS STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE HOUSE.

PUPPIES DIE IN JOHNSTOWN

JOHNSTOWN POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING AFTER 2 PUPPIES WERE FOUND DEAD INSIDE A HOME ON BEATRICE STREET. CHIEF CRAIG FOUST TELLS WJAC THE HOME WAS IN DEPLORABLE CONDITION AND IT WASN'T CLEAR IF THE ANIMALS DIED DUE TO MALNUTRITION OR IF THEY POSSIBLY FROZE TO DEATH. NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED SO FAR, BUT POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR THE HOME OWNERS. THE HOME HAS BEEN CONDEMNED BY CITY CODE OFFICIALS.

ALTOONA DRUG BUST

ALTOONA POLICE AND STATE DRUG AGENTS YESTERDAY ARRESTED 25 YEAR OLD ANTONY WILLIAMS OF ALTOONA WHO IS ACCUSED OF BEING A MID-LEVEL HEROIN DEALER.WHEN THE BLAIR COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE EXECUTED A SEARCH WARRANT AT WILLIAMS’ JUNIATA HOME, THEY FOUND 10 BAGS OF HEROIN, A STOLEN LOADED HANDGUN, AND 13-HUNDRED DOLLARS IN CASH.

VANDALS HIT CEMETERY

LAST YEAR, MORE THAN 100 VOLUNTEERS SPENT MANY HOURS CLEANING UP ALTOONA’S OAK RIDGE CEMETERY…AND NOW VANDALS HAVE HIT THE CEMETERY AGAIN. THEY SPRAY PAINTED GRAFFITTI ON A WALL AND SEVERAL TOMBSTONES…THEN KNOCKED OVER OTHER GRAVESTONES. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THE VANDALS SHOULD CALL ALTOONA POLICE.

FORMER OFFICIAL PLEADS NOT GUILTY

IN JOHNSTOWN’S FEDERAL COURT YESTERDAY, RON REPAK, THE FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE JOHNSTOWN REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY, PLEADED NOT GUILTY AS HE WAS ARRAIGNED ON 6 FELONY COUNTS OF BRIBERY AND EXTORION. REPAK IS FREE ON 10-THOUSAND DOLLARS UNSECURED BOND AND HIS TRIAL DATE HAS NOT YET BEEN SET. HE WAS ORDERED TO TURN OVER HIS PASSPORT. REPAK IS ACCUSED OF GETTING THINGS FOR HIS SON’S PRIVATE BUSINESS, A NEW ROOF FOR HIS HOME, AND TICKETS STEELERS GAMES.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

THE STATE SUPREME COURT HAS DENIED A REQUEST FOR A HEARING TO BE HELD ON BEHALF OF ONE OF JERRY SANDUSKY'S DEFENSE ATTORNEYS REGARDING POTENTIAL INFORMATION LEAKS TO THE MEDIA REGARDING HIS TRIAL. KARL ROMINGER WAS ORDERED TO REVEAL WHETHER HE SHARED WITH THE MEDIA ANY SANDUSKY-RELATED DOCUMENTS PRODUCED BY PROSECUTORS IN THE CASE. MEANWHILE, SANDUSKY'S ATTORNEYS HAVE APPEALED HIS CONVICTION TO THE HIGH COURT AFTER THE SUPERIOR COURT REJECTED HIS MOTION IN OCTOBER.

DESPITE THE BITTER COLD, NEARLY 75 PEOPLE GATHERED AT PENN STATE LAST NIGHT FOR A CANDLELIGHT VIGIL TO MARK THE 2 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF JOE PATERNO. THE PATERNO FAMILY DID NOT ATTEND THE VIGIL, WHICH WAS ORGANIZED BY INSPIRATION WAY, A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT AIMS TO HIGHLIGHT INSPIRATIONAL PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY.

OFFICER’S FUNERAL

ALTOONA AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT AND TYRONE BORO POLICE OFFICER CHRISTOPHER AMERINE SUFFERED A FATAL HEART ATTACK WHILE PLAYING BASKETBALL SUNDAY. FRIENDS WILL BE RECEIVED TODAY FROM 5 TO 8 AT SANTELLA FUNERAL HOME…AND ALSO TOMORROW FROM 2 TO 9 AT OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL CHURCH WHERE A FUNERAL MASS WILL BE HELD SATURDAY AT 10:30.
