MISSING GIRLS FOUND

HUNTINGDON COUNTY AUTHORITIES SAY 2 TEENAGE GIRLS MISSING SINCE SUNDAY NIGHT HAVE BEEN FOUND SAFE AND SOUND. 17 YEAR OLD SOFIA VARNER AND 15 YEAR OLD LYZA SPYKER OF ALEXANDRIA CALLED THEIR PARENTS LAST NIGHT FROM A COFFEE SHOP IN LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA. NOW, THEIR PARENTS ARE FLYING OUT TO GET THEM AND BRING THEM HOME.

BOMB SUSPECT REMAINS JAILED

A PRELIMINARY HEARING WAS SCHEDULED YESTERDAY FOR PENN STATE ALTOONA STUDENT VLADISLAV MIFTAKHOV, BUT IT WAS CONTINUED UNTIL FEBRUARY 18TH. THE 18 YEAR OLD RUSSIAN NATIVE IS CHARGED WITH MAKING HOMEMADE BOMBS AT HIS JUNIATA APARTMENT. THE DISTRICT JUDGE ORDERED BAIL TO REMAIN AT 500-THOUSAND DOLLARS CASH BECAUSE MIFTAKHOV IS CONSIDERED A FLIGHT RISK.

STUDENT EXPELLED

OFFICIALS AT ADMIRAL PEARY VO-TECH CONFIRMED YESTERDAY THAT THE 16 YEAR OLD STUDENT WHO TOOK A LOADED HANDGUN INTO THE CAMBRIA TOWNSHIP SCHOOL LAST MONTH WILL BE EXPELLED FOR ONE YEAR. HE IS ALSO EXPECTED TO BE EXPELLED FROM HIS HOMETOWN SCHOOL, BLACKLICK VALLEY. THE TEEN TOLD STAFF MEMBERS HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT BEING ATTACKED BY ANOTHER STUDENT AFTER SCHOOL.

BANK ROBBER PLEADS GUILTY

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COUNT YESTERDAY, 45 YEAR OLD JEFFREY PELLEGRINO OF EBENSBURG PLEADED GUILTY TO ROBBING THE S & T BANK IN ARMAGH, INDIANA COUNTY, AT KNIFEPOINT IN SEPTEMBER. HE WAS SENTENCED TO 16 MONTHS TO 8 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON. PELLEGRINO IS ALSO ACCUSED OF ROBBING FIRST NATIONAL BANK IN CRESSON THE NEXT DAY. THAT CASE HAS BEEN CONTINUED UNTIL APRIL.

NURSES READY FOR STRIKE

NEGOTIATIONS BROKE DOWN OVER THE WEEKEND, AND MORE THAN 800 REGISTERED NURSES AT UPMC ALTOONA ARE PLANNING A ONE-DAY STRIKE TUESDAY. THEY HAVE SCHEDULED A NEWS CONFERENCE TODAY TO DISCUSS THEIR CONCERNS ABOUT THE HOSPITAL’S PLAN TO USE R-N’S FROM A TEMPORARY AGENCY. THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS BOARD TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR, BASED ON LABOR LAW, UPMC CANNOT LOCK OUT THE NURSES AFTER THE ONE DAY STRIKE AS A PUNISHMENT. HOSPITAL SPOKESMAN DAVE CUZZOLINA SAYS THE NURSES “MAY HAVE A TRANSITION TO ALLOW A REASONABLE AND ORDERLY RETURN BACK TO THEIR ORDINARY OPERATIONS.”

LOCKOUT ILLEGAL?

THE ALTOONA MIRROR SAYS UTILITY WORKERS UNION OF AMERICA LOCAL 180 BELIEVES A FIRSTENERGY LOCKOUT AGAINST WORKERS IS ILLEGAL BECAUSE OF MANAGEMENT’S BARGAINING TACTICS. THE UNION HAS FILED UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES CHARGES WITH THE NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS BOARD. THE LOCKOUT HAS BEEN UNDERWAY SINCE NOVEMBER IN ALTOONA AND THE SURROUNDING AREA.
