NASTY ICE STORM A 50 VEHICLE PILE-UP ON I-80 IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY DURING YESTERDAY MORNING’S ICE STORM. POLICE SAY ROUGHLY 40 TRACTOR TRAILERS AND 10 PASSENGER VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED BETWEEN MILE MARKERS 120 AND 127. THE HIGHWAY WAS CLOSED FOR ABOUT 10 HOURS, THEN ONE LANE RE-OPENED. MORE THAN A DOZEN PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO CLEARFIELD HOSPITAL WITH MINOR TO MODERATE INJURIES.

SOMERSET COUNTY DEPUTY CORONER JAMES HAHN DIED FOLLOWING A CRASH ON AN ICY WATER LEVEL ROAD IN MILFORD TOWNSHIP ABOUT 9:30 WEDNESDAY MORNING. HIS CAR COLLIDED HEAD-ON WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN THE 17 YEAR OLD MALE DRIVER LOST CONTROL AND CROSSED INTO THE OPPOSITE LANE. THE 73 YEAR OLD HAHN WAS ALSO A RETIRED SOMERSET BORO POLICE OFFICER. THE TEENAGER SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES.

PARENTS ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE TYRONE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT. ROADS WERE ICE-COVERED AND TREACHEROUS WEDNESDAY MORNING, BUT THE DISTRICT DID NOT DELAY OR CANCEL CLASSES. SOME STUDENTS GOT ON THEIR BUSES AT THE REGULAR TIME AND 2 CRASHED. OFFICIALS CLOSED SCHOOL AND ORDERED ALL BUSES TO PULL OVER AND REMAIN WHERE THEY WERE. THEY STAYED FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR UNTIL THE ROADS IMPROVED AND THE DRIVERS TOOK THEM HOME. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS HURT IN THE ACCIDENTS. TYRONE SUPERINTENDENT CATHY HARLOW POSTED A STATEMENT ON THE DISTRICT’S WEBSITE SAYING WEATHER CONDITIONS DETERIORATED RAPIDLY AFTER SOME STUDENTS WERE ALREADY ON THEIR WAY. SHE PLANS TO CONTINUE TO EVALUATE THE DELAY AND CANCELLATION PROCESS WITH THE SAFETY OF ALL STUDENTS IN MIND.

POLICE FOUND HOMEMADE BOMBS WHEN THEY SEARCHED THE RUSSIAN NATIVE’S JUNIATA APARTMENT LAST MONTH. SENTENCING DELAYED FOR DRUG KINGPIN

IN JOHNSTOWN’S FEDERAL COURT, SENTENCING HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL MAY 13TH FOR 43 YEAR OLD GEORGE LOWMASTER OF CARROLLTOWN. HE FACES UP TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO 4 COUNTS OF RUNNING A HUGE DRUG RING IN SEVERAL COUNTIES FOR MANY YEARS. 25 OTHER PEOPLE, INCLUDING LOWMASTER’S PARENTS, ALSO PLEADED GUILTY TO BEING INVOLVED.

ATTORNEYS FOR GRAHAM SPANIER, GARY SCHULTZ, AND TIM CURLEY ARE STILL HOPING TO HAVE PERJURY, CHILD ENDANGERMENT, AND CONSPIRACY CHARGES THROWN OUT. ACCORDING TO STATECOLLEGE.COM, THE LAWYERS CLAIM THE JUDGE AND DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL IN THE JERRY SANDUSKY GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION ACTED UNFAIRLY. THEY ARE STILL BATTLING OVER THE ROLE PLAYED BY FORMER PENN STATE GENERAL COUNSEL CYNTHIA BALDWIN. A TRIAL HAS NOT YET BEEN SCHEDULED.

THE PENNS VALLEY AREA SCHOOL BOARD LAST NIGHT FIRED LONGTIME ATHLETIC DIRECTOR DONALD HOSTERMAN WHO HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH STEALING ABOUT 400 DOLLARS FROM SPORTING EVENTS. HOSTERMAN TOLD POLICE HE TOOK THE MONEY DUE TO FINANCIAL PROBLEMS.
