SHOTS FIRED IN ALTOONA

WTAJ REPORTS THAT SHOTS WERE FIRED ABOUT 4:30 THIS MORNING ALONG THE 300 BLOCK OF 4TH AVENUE IN ALTOONA. AN AMBULANCE WAS SENT TO THE LOCATION, BUT NO WORD ON ANY INJURIES. POLICE ARE ON THE SCENE AND PARTS OF THE AREA ARE BLOCKED OFF.

POLICE CALLED IT A RIOT

A DOZEN PENN STATE ALTOONA STUDENTS…10 MALES AND 2 FEMALES…WERE ARRESTED AT A SATURDAY AFTERNOON DRINKING PARTY AT THE NITTANY POINTE APARTMENTS IN LOGAN TOWNSHIP. THE ALTOONA MIRROR SAYS ABOUT 800 PEOPLE WERE TAKING PART IN THE “TOON PARTY,” SO LOGAN TOWNSHIP POLICE ENACTED A RIOT PROTOCOL AND ORDERED EVERYONE TO STAY INSIDE THEIR APARTMENTS. VIOLATORS WERE HANDCUFFED. NUMEROUS BEER BOTTLES WERE THROWN FROM BALCONIES AND A VODKA BOTTLE HIT A POLICE CRUISER. ONE STUDENT WAS ARRESTED EVEN THOUGH HE WASN’T ATTENDING THE PARTY OR DRINKING BECAUSE HE REFUSED TO GO INSIDE AND THEN ALLEGEDLY RESISTED ARREST.

PENN STATE STUDENT KILLED

PITTSBURGH POLICE SAY 22 YEAR OLD PENN STATE STUDENT CODY BARASSE IS DEAD AFTER AN INCIDENT NEAR THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH’S OAKLAND CAMPUS. FRIENDS SAY BARASSE WAS STRUCK BY A SILVER B-M-W ON BATES STREET SHORTLY AFTER 2 SATURDAY MORNING. THE DRIVER FLED THE SCENE, BUT LATER CALLED POLICE FROM THE SOUTH SIDE TO REPORT 3 MEN TRIED TO ATTACK HIM AND HIS PASSENGER ON BATES STREET. HE SAID HE HAD TO HIT THE GAS TO GET AWAY FROM THEM. POLICE SAY THE DRIVER WAS NOT INTOXICATED.

$1,000,000 WORTH OF HEROIN

STATE POLICE AND THE SOMERSET COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY WILL HOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE THIS AFTERNOON TO DISCUSS FINDING MORE THAN 1 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF HEROIN DURING A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP ALONG THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE IN SOMERSET TOWNSHIP. ON FRIDAY, TROOPERS PULLED OVER 27 YEAR OLD WARREN GREEN THE 4TH OF PITTSBURGH FOR SPEEDING AND DISCOVERED 1-THOUSAND BRICKS OF HEROIN IN HIS CAR. GREEN IS JAILED ON 750-THOUSAND DOLLARS BAIL.

GUN OWNERS RALLY

MORE THAN 300 PEOPLE STAGED A RALLY SUNDAY AFTERNOON OUTSIDE GRICE GUN SHOP IN CLEARFIELD IN SUPPORT OF THEIR SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS. STATE REPRESENTATIVES MATT GABLER AND TOMMY SANKEY ATTENDED ALONG WITH CONGRESSMAN GLENN THOMPSON. A COUPLE OF STATES HAVE ALREADY PASSED GUN CONTROL MEASURES AND A NEW BILL HAS BEEN INTRODUCED IN THE PENNSYLVANIA ASSEMBLY TO BAN THE SALE OF MAGAZINE CLIPS CARRYING MORE THAN 10 ROUNDS AS WELL AS AN ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN AND STRICTER BACKGROUND CHECKS.

VOTING FOR PENN STATE’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES  BEGINS WEDNESDAY AND IN A LETTER THIS WEEKEND, THE PATERNO SAID THEY ARE ENDORSING BARBARA DORAN, WILLIAM OLDSEY AND EDWARD BROWN. THE ALUMNI GROUP PENN STATERS FOR RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP IS ALSO ENDORSING THOSE SAME CANDIDATES.

THE CITY OF ALTOONA’S SPRING YARD WASTE COLLECTION BEGINS TODAY AND RUNS THROUGH WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17TH. ALL ITEMS MUST BE PLACED IN BROWN COMPOST BAGS AND BE CURBSIDE BY 7AM ON YOUR REGULAR COLLECTION DAY. THE MAP CAN BE VIEWED AT altoonapa.gov

FALLING GAS PRICES

GOOD NEWS FOR DRIVERS AS THE PRICE AT THE PUMP CONTINUES TO DECLINE. THE LATEST LUNDBERG SURVEY SHOWS THE NATIONAL AVERAGE IS DOWN TO JUST OVER $3.64 PER GALLON…DOWN MORE THAN 6-CENTS A GALLON IN THE PAST 2 WEEKS. MOST ALTOONA-AREA DRIVERS ARE STILL PAYING $3.69.
