ARSON SUSPECT ARRESTED

POLICE SAY EDWARD HOUCK OF FRANKSTOWN ROAD SET HIS HOUSE ON FIRE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND ALSO TRIED TO BARRICADE HIS PROPERTY TO KEEP EMERGENCY CREWS OUT. HOUCK WAS IN POSSESSION OF A 38 CALIBER WEAPON WHEN HE WAS ARRESTED. THE HOME’S HEATING TANKS WERE PUNCTURED AND HEATING OIL WAS DUMPED ALL OVER THE PLACE. THE FIRE GUTTED MOST OF THE GARAGE AND HEAVILY DAMAGED THE SECOND FLOOR OF THE HOUSE. HOUCK WAS TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM.

HUNTINGDON APARTMENTS BURN

8 PEOPLE ARE HOMELESS AND A STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL IS INVESTIGATING AFTER A FIRE BROKE OUT SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT AN APARTMENT BUILDING AT 300 MIFFLIN STREET IN HUNTINGDON BORO. THERE WERE NO INJURIES.

THEFT AT EXPLOSION SITE

A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, BRAD KOLLAR SET OFF EXPLOSIVES AT THE WILLIAM SHANER FAMILY HOME IN CLEARFIELD TOWNSHIP, CAMBRIA COUNTY…KILLING HIMSELF AND INJURING SHANER AND HIS TEENAGE SON…NOW STATE POLICE SAY SOMEONE BROKE INTO THE GARAGE AND STOLE A SNOWMOBILE AND AN A-T-V. ONLY THE GARAGE AND THE POOL WERE LEFT AFTER THE EXPLOSION. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THE THEFT IS ASKED TO CALL POLICE.

VIGIL PLANNED

A CANDELIGHT VIGIL IS BEING PLANNED LATER THIS WEEK IN MEMORY OF TRACI RAYMOND MISCAVISH WHO WAS SHOT TO DEATH BY HER ESTRANGED HUSBAND, MARK, LAST WEEK AT COUNTY MARKET IN PHILIPSBURG. THE RETIRED STATE TROOPER THEN KILLED HIMSELF.THE TIME AND PLACE FOR THE VIGIL HAVE NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED.

SUICIDE FOLLOWING POLICE CHASE

IN SOMERSET COUNTY, A SIPESVILLE AREA MAN IS DEAD FROM A SELF-INFLICTED GUNSHOT AFTER LEADING STATE TROOPERS ON A PURSUIT THROUGH THE ACOSTA AREA SATURDAY NIGHT. STATE POLICE SAY 49 YEAR OLD RANDY KEARNS FLED  AFTER HE PULLED A FIREARM DURING A DOMESTIC DISPUTE. HE EVENTUALLY PULLED OVER IN A PARKING LOT AND TURNED THE GUN ON HIMSELF.

ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING WAS PHONY

WILLIAMSBURG POLICE NOW SAY AN ALLEGED CRIME VICTIM WILL BE FACING CHARGES HIMSELF. A 19 YEAR OLD MAN CLAIMED A MAN IN A BLUE CHEVY ORDERED HIM TO GET INTO THE VEHICLE, THEN CHASED HIM ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE MAN PROVIDED FALSE INFORMATION.

MAJOR INJURIES

19 YEAR OLD WILLIAM GLASS OF ALEXANDRIA SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES SUNDAY AFTERNOON WHEN HIS SPEEDING CAR CRASHED ALONG STATE ROUTE 153 IN PINE TOWNSHIP, HUNTINGDON COUNTY. GLASS WAS FLOWN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER. STATE POLICE SAY HIS VEHICLE BECAME AIRBORNE AND BEGAN TO OVERTURN WHEN IT LANDED. IT THEN STRUCK A TREE WITH ITS ROOF AND A SECOND TREE WITH THE FRONT END.

GAS LEAK IN STATE COLLEGE

A NATURAL GAS LEAK CLOSED PARK AVENUE IN STATE COLLEGE FOR 13 HOURS YESTERDAY BETWEEN NORTH ATHERTON STREET AND BURROWES STREET. POLICE SAY AN ODOR OF NATURAL GAS WAS NOTICED AT ABOUT 2AM. THE STREET REOPENED AT ABOUT 3:30 AFTER THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED.

NEW STATE PRISON

STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS WILL BE IN CENTRE COUNTY AT 10:30 THIS MORNING TO HOLD AN OPENING CEREMONY FOR THE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED PRISON IN BENNER TOWNSHIP. PUBLIC TOURS OF THE 200-MILLION DOLLAR FACILITY WILL BE OFFERED TODAY FROM 1 TO 4 AND 6 TO 8PM. TOMORROW’S TOURS ARE FROM 6 TO 8PM… AND MORE THAN 2-THOUSAND INMATES WILL BEGIN MOVING IN STARTING IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. THE PRISON WILL HAVE MORE THAN 500 STAFF ON BOARD BY THE END OF JUNE. EARLIER THIS YEAR, CORRECTIONS SECRETARY JOHN WETZEL ANNOUNCED THE CLOSINGS OF THE STATE PRISONS AT CRESSON AND GREENSBURG.
