COLLEGES UNDER INVESTIGATION

Penn State is among 55 universities and colleges NATIONWIDE being investigated for possible TITLE 9 violations INCLUDING THE POTENTIAL MIS-handling of sexual violence and harassment complaints. THE list WAS released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Education in what it called a move for transparency. Penn State SPOKESWOMAN LISA POWERS SAYS THE UNIVESITY CONTINUES TO WORK DILIGENTLY WITH THE OFFICE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS TO RESPOND TO REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION IN THE ON-GOING REVIEW. OTHER PENNSYLVANIA SCHOOLS under similar review ARE Carnegie Mellon, Temple, Franklin and Marshall College, and Swarthmore College.

COACH SPEAKS OUT

 

Penn State football coach JAMES FRANKLIN HELD A NEWS CONFERENCE YESTERDAY TO KICK OFF THE 2014 COACHES CARAVAN…AND SAID HE IS COOPERATING FULLY WITH AUTHORITIES CONCERNING A RAPE CASE AT VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY. THIS WEEK, THE DEFENSE CLAIMED FRANKLIN contactED the ALLEGED victim AND TOLD HER they cared about her because she helped them with recruiting. THE LAWYERS ALSO CLAIM HE asked her to round up other “pretty girls” to help them recruit players.
Thursday, the Tennessee district attorney, ADMITTED THAT Franklin AND HIS WIFE did speak with the victim AND TELL HER they were praying for her. THE PROSECUTION DOES NOT believe FRANKLIN WAS INVOLVED IN ANY COVER UP. Coach Franklin said after all the Penn State community has been through in recent years, he wants to remain as transparent as possible. He askED everyone to respect the legal process and understand he can only talk so much about it.

 

STRING OF HEROIN OD’S

 

THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT REPORTS THAT JOHNSTOWN POlice and ambulance personnel responded to 3 reported heroin overdoses Thursday evening. THE FIRST WAS at a residence on the 700 block of Coleman Avenue. While at the scene, a resident hollered at officers that there were 2 more overdoses at a nearby residence…AND there were reports of 3 MORE overdoses in the suburbs. Police ARE TRYING TO Determine if there is a common thread.

 

PENELEC BACKS DOWN

 

IT WAS A LONG COLD WINTER AND FIRST ENERGY COMPANY HIT FIXED PRICE CUSTOMERS WITH A ONE-TIME SURCHARGE FROM 5 TO 15 DOLLARS ON THEIR JANUARY ELECTRIC BILLS…NOW THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT THE UTILITY HAS AGREED TO WAIVE THOSE FEES. BUSINESS CUSTOMERS WILL STILL BE CHARGED AN EXTRA FEE ON THEIR MAY, JUNE, OR JULY BILLS. MOST WILL HAVE TO PAY ABOUT 30-DOLLARS.

 

CANDIDATES WILL DEBATE

 

THE 3 REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES FOR THE 9TH DISTRICT U-S HOUSE SEAT WILL FACE OFF IN A DEBATE TONIGHT AT 67 AT PENN STATE ALTOONA’S DOWNTOWN DEVORRIS CENTER. INCUMBENT BILL SHUSTER IS BEING CHALLENGED BY BEDFORD COUNTY DEVELOPER ART HALVORSON AND FRANKLIN COUNTY FARMER TRAVIS SCHOOLEY.

 

GOVERNOR CANDIDATE REMOVED FROM BALLOT

 

Governor Tom Corbett is not going to have a challenger in the May 20th primary. The STATE Supreme Court SAYS Republican Bob Guzzardi will be removed from the ballot BECAUSE HE WAS late filing his financial disclosure form. A lower court previously ruled Guzzardi could remain on the ballot, but that decision was appealed.  

 

BUDGET PROBLEMS?

 

Governor Tom Corbett is confident his budget proposal will be approved by the June 30th deadline. Yesterday, HE acknowledged a 477-million dollar revenue shortfall for the month of April due to lagging personal income tax collections. Officials say the deficit could knock the governor's budget proposal off balance by a billion dollars, BUT Corbett claims federal tax increases last year led to less revenue for the state this year.

 

OBAMACARE ENROLLMENT

The federal government has released the final state enrollment numbers for the Affordable Care Act. During the first open enrollment period, 318-THOUSAND-549 Pennsylvanians signed up on the federal healthcare exchange. 30 percent of theM were between the ages of 18 and 34. Pennsylvania ranked 4th for the total number of enrollees. nationally, 8 million Americans enrolled..

GAS PRICES KEEP CLIMBING

 

Gas prices are pushing higher again, just in time for the summer driving season. The good news is that experts think prices are about to hit their peak for the year. The national average is about $3.69. THAT’S UP 10 CENTS FROM JUST A MONTH AGO. SOME AREA GAS STATIONS ARE CHARGING UP TO $3.85.

TODAY IS PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE DAY AND TROOP G WILL HOLD A MEMORIAL CEREMONY AT 10AM AT THE HEADQUARTERS IN HOLLIDAYSBURG. AFTER THE SERVICE TO HONOR ALL MEMBERS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY, A DETAIL OF TROOPERS WILL GO TO ALTO RESTE CEMETERY IN ALTOONA TO PLACE MEMORIAL FLAGS AT THE GRAVE OF PRIVATE FLOYD CLOUSE WHO WAS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN BEAVER COUNTY BACK IN 1953. A STATE POLICE HELICOPTER AND THE SPECIAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM EQUIPMENT will be ON DISPLAY ALONG with a MARKED PATROL CAR.
