SCHOOL LOCKED DOWN BRIEFLY
3 HOLLIDAYSBURG AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT BUILDINGS WERE BRIEFLY LOCKED DOWN YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS A SUSPICIOUS NOISE THAT SOUNDED LIKE A GUNSHOT RANG OUT IN THE WOODS NEAR THE SENIOR HIGH. STUDENTS AND TEACHERS REMAINED IN THEIR CLASSROOMS AND THOSE WHO WERE IN THE CAFETERIA WERE TAKEN TO A MORE PROTECTED AREA. NO VISITORS WERE ALLOWED INSIDE.HOLLIDAYSBURG POLICE CHIEF JEFF KETNER SAYS OFFICERS FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF A SHOOTER IN THE WOODS.

SOME HAVE QUESTIONED WHETHER POLICE OVER-REACTED, BUT LOGAN TOWNSHIP SUPERVISORS TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR THEY UNANIMOUSLY SUPPORT THE OFFICERS WHO BROKE UP THE PARTY.

CONVICTED KILLER APPEALING
WILLIAM THOMPSON OF ALTOONA IS SERVING A LIFE SENTENCE FOR THE 2002 STABBING DEATHS OF RAYMOND AND MARJORIE BRACKEN AT THEIR SPRUCE AVENUE HOME. NOW, THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT THE JUDGE HAS ORDERED A HEARING ON JUNE 17TH TO REVIEW SEVERAL ISSUES, INCLUDING HOW A FALSE STATEMENT THOMPSON GAVE TO POLICE OFF THE RECORD MAY HAVE AFFECTED HIS DEFENSE. THOMPSON ALLEGEDLY CLAIMED HE WAS AT THE HOME TO ROB THE COUPLE, BUT HE HAd NO PART IN THE MURDERS.

According to THE NEW figures, Cambria County suffered an estimated 7-tenths of a percent population drop during a 12-month period that ended on July 1ST. The loss was tied for 5th-sharpest, among the nation’s 381 areas, with East Stroudsburg and Binghamton, NEW YORK. The 4 cities on the fastest decline were Pine Bluff ArkANSAS…Joplin MISSOURI…Flint MichIGAN, and Danville IllINOIS. Approximately 190-THOUSAND People lived in Cambria County when the 1977 flood hit. THE NUMBER IS DOWN TO 141-THOUSAND-584.
