ACCUSED ARSONIST COULD FACE DEATH PENALTY

62 YEAR OLD AARON DISHONG OF EAST FREEDOM IS ACCUSED OF KILLING 3 YEAR OLD DARREL ETCHISON JUNIOR ALMOST 2 WEEKS AGO WHEN HE SET FIRE TO THE BOY’S HOME…MISTAKENLY BELIEVING HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND WAS INSIDE. YESTERDAY, CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYERS TOM DICKEY AND STEVEN PASSARELLO WERE APPOINTED TO REPRESENT HIM. PROSECUTORS HAVEN’T MADE A FINAL DECISION, BUT THEY COULD SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY. THE LITTLE BOY WAS LAID TO REST YESTERDAY.

HOMICIDE CHARGES FILED

CAMBRIA COUNTY AUTHORITIES HAVE UPGRADED THE CHARGES AGAINST 50 YEAR OLD GREGORY CONZO OF SUMMERHILL TOWNSHIP TO INCLUDE CRIMINAL HOMICIDE. POLICE SAY HE BEAT MICHAEL PCOLA WITH A BASEBALL BAT NOVEMBER 5TH AND PCOLA DIED 2 DAYS LATER. CONZO REMAINS IN THE COUNTY PRISON.

MAN JAILED FOR BEATING WOMAN

AN ARGUMENT OVER A CAR LED TO AN ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE MONDAY EVENING IN EVERETT. 38 YEAR OLD YEAR OLD MICHAEL DICKEN JUNIOR OF HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP ALLEGEDLY CHOKED A WOMAN AND BEAT HER WITH A BOARD BECAUSE SHE WOULDN’T LET HIM USE HER VEHICLE. THE VICTIM WAS TREATED AT UPMC BEDFORD MEMORIAL, THEN TRANSFERRED TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER WITH A FACIAL FRACTURE AND A HEAD LACERATION. DICKEN IS IN THE BEDFORD COUNTY PRISON ON 300-THOUSAND DOLLARS BOND.

BURGLAR GETS LONG PRISON SENTENCE

A BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED 53 YEAR OLD HARRY ROLAND OF ALTOONA TO 16 TO 36 YEARS IN PRISON FOR A 12 DAY BURGLARY SPREE THAT OCCURRED LAST DECEMBER AND JANUARY. POLICE SAY ROLAND BURGLARIZED 7 DIFFERENT HOMES IN LOGAN, FREEDOM, AND TYRONE TOWNSHIPS. ROLAND HAS AN EXTENSIVE CRIMINAL RECORD WHICH INCLUDED PRIOR BREAK-INS.

HUNTER FOUND IN THE WOODS

A HAPPY ENDING IN THE SEARCH FOR A MISSING BLAIR COUNTY HUNTER. 84 YEAR OLD GEORGE HAMMEL JUNIOR WAS REPORTED MISSING MONDAY AFTERNOON AND DOZENS OF VOLUNTEERS SPENT THAT NIGHT AND TUESDAY MORNING IN THE WOODS SEARCHING FOR HIM. HE WAS FINALLY FOUND, LYING ON THE GROUND, JUST BEFORE 12:30PM, ABOUT A MILE FROM WHERE HE HAD LAST BEEN SEEN.
HAMMEL WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO ALTOONA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER AND HE WILL APPARENTLY BE OK.

ALTOONA’S ACT 47 PUBLIC HEARING

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT ALTOONA CITY COUNCIL LAST NIGHT INTRODUCED ORDINANCES THAT SHOULD EVENTUALLY ESTABLISH THE CITY’S ACT 47 RECOVERY PLAN…A BUDGET…AND TAX HIKES FOR 2013. CITY OFFICIALS ARE HOPING FOR MAJOR CHANGES IN THE ACT 47 RECOVERY PLAN. THEY PARTICULARLY DON’T LIKE THE RECOMMENDATION TO HAVE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TAKE OVER AMED AMBULANCE SERVICE. COUNCIL HOLDS A PUBLIC HEARING TONIGHT AT 5:30 AT THE DEVORRIS DOWNTOWN CENTER.

COUNTIES AVOID TAX HIKES

CAMBRIA COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WILL UNVEIL A 2013 BUDGET PROPOSAL ON FRIDAY…AND YESTERDAY THEY PROMISED TO HOLD THE LINE ON TAXES. NO FIGURES WERE RELEASED, BUT PRESIDENT COMMISSIONER DOUGLAS LENGENFELDER SAYS IT DOESN’T APPEAR THAT THEY WILL MAKE ANY DRASTIC CHANGES IN PRELIMINARY FIGURES SUBMITTED BY ELECTED OFFICEHOLDERS AND DEPARTMENT HEADS. FINAL BUDGET ADOPTION IS SET FOR DECEMBER 21ST.

CLEARFIELD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS YESTERDAY PRESENTED A NO-TAX-INCREASE BUDGET FOR 2013. IN FACT, THEY HAVEN’T RAISED TAXES SINCE 2006 AND STILL HAVE A GENERAL FUND BALANCE TOTALING OVER 5 MILLION DOLLARS. THE SPENDING PLAN WILL BE ADVERTISED FOR 20 DAYS BEFORE IT CAN BE ADOPTED. 

BIG JOB FOR SHUSTER

9TH DISTRICT CONGRESSMAN BILL SHUSTER MAY BE FOLLOWING HIS FATHER AS CHAIRMAN OF THE U-S HOUSE TRANSPORTATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE COMMITTEE. SHUSTER COULD BE NAMED AS SOON AS TODAY. HE’S SERVING HIS 7TH TERM IN WASHINGTON AND IS ON THE LIST OF RECOMMENDED CHAIRS NAMED BY REPUBLICAN PARTY LEADERS. BUD SHUSTER HELD THE POSITION FROM 1995 TO 2001.

THE WEBSITE "24-7 WALL STREET" SAYS PENNSYLVANIA IS NUMBER-20 AND IS IN THE TOP 50-PERCENT WHEN IT COMES TO BUDGET DEFICIT, UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME AND PERCENTAGE OF RESIDENTS LIVING IN POVERTY. THE SURVEY SAYS NORTH DAKOTA IS TOPS WHILE CALIFORNIA IS RANKED WORST IN THE U.S.
