DIOCESE FACING LAWSUIT

GREENSBURG ATTORNEY SUSAN WILLIAMS TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR THAT THE ALTOONA-JOHNSTOWN DIOCESE, THE 3RD ORDER OF REGULAR FRANCISCANS, JOHNSTOWN’S BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL, AND THE DIOCESE OF YOUNGSTOWN WILL PROBABLY BE SERVED TODAY WITH A NOTIFICATION OF A CIVIL LAWSUIT. WILLIAMS REPRESENTS 3 YOUNG MEN WHO CLAIM THEY WERE MOLESTED BY BROTHER STEPHEN BAKER WHILE HE SERVED AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. BAKER…WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE SATURDAY AT ST. BERNADINE’S MONASTERY IN HOLLIDAYSBURG …PREVIOUSLY SETTLED WITH 11 MEN FROM OHIO WHO SAID HE ABUSED THEM WHEN THEY WERE BOYS. MORE AND MORE POTENTIAL VICTIMS ARE CONTINUING TO COME FORWARD.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

LAWYERS FOR JERRY SANDUSKY'S VICTIMS TELL WTAJ THAT TALKS WITH PENN STATE HAVE BEEN PRODUCTIVE, AND THEY HOPE TO REACH SETTLEMENTS WITHIN A MONTH. PENN STATE'S NEGOTIATING TEAM SAYS THEY'VE TALKED ABOUT SETTLEMENTS WITH 28 DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND THEY HOPE TO AVOID GOING TO CIVIL COURT. THE COURTS HAVE FROZEN ALL CIVIL TRIALS AGAINST PENN STATE UNTIL THE CRIMINAL TRIALS OF GARY SCHULTZ, TIM CURLEY, AND GRAHAM SPANIER WRAP UP.

THE PENNSYLVANIA SENATE IS EXPECTED TO VOTE TODAY ON SENATOR JAKE CORMAN’S BILL THAT COULD KEEP PENN STATE’S 60 MILLION DOLLAR FINE LEVIED BY THE NCAA IN THE STATE.
IF PASSED, THE UNIVERSITY WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE MONEY IN STATE ENDOWMENTS TO BE DISBURSED BY THE STATE TREASURER WITHIN THE GUIDELINES OF THE NCAA CONSENT DECREE. THE BILL WILL THEN NEED HOUSE APPROVAL.

FROZEN BODY FOUND

STATE POLICE HAVE FINALLY CONFIRMED THAT A FROZEN BODY WAS FOUND AT THE BASE OF A SILO NEAR THE BEDFORD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S HALL LAST WEDNESDAY. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR GILLIAN LEACH TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR THAT THE BLACK MAN REPORTEDLY RODE A GREYHOUND BUS INTO THE AREA THE PREVIOUS DAY AND HE WAS CARRYING POLITICAL BUTTONS. IT LOOKS LIKE HE FELL OR JUMPED FROM THE TOP OF THE SILO. POLICE PLAN TO RELEASE MORE DETAILS LATER.

VICTIMS IDENTIFIED

STATE POLICE IN HUNTINGDON COUNTY HAVE NOW RELEASED THE NAMES OF THE VICTIMS IN MONDAY’S SNOW-RELATED CRASH. 18 YEAR OLD BETHANY COPENHAVER AND HER 25 YEAR OLD SISTER, VANESSA CHRISTENSEN…BOTH OF BURNT CABINS…WERE KILLED WHEN THEIR S-U-V SLID INTO A TRACTOR TRAILER ALONG ROUTE 522 IN DUBLIN TOWNSHIP. NEITHER WAS WEARING A SEATBELT. A 4 MONTH OLD GIRL IS LISTED IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT HERSHEY MEDICAL CENTER. SHE WAS IN A CHILD SAFETY SEAT.

STILL MISSING

STATE POLICE ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR 50 YEAR OLD BRUCE MAUST WHO WENT MISSING SUNDAY WHILE SNOWMOBILING NEAR LAUREL HILL STATE PARK IN SOMERSET COUNTY. MAUST HAS PICK’S DISEASE WHICH CAUSES DEMENTIA. HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS HAVE HELPED IN THE SEARCH, BUT THE DENSE FOG IS MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT.


ANOTHER FLU VICTIM

THE STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT SAYS A PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF 18 HAS DIED FROM THE FLU. THAT WAS ONE OF 27 FLU-RELATED DEATHS IN PENNSYLVANIA, LAST WEEK. SINCE SEPTEMBER, 102 PEOPLE IN THE STATE HAVE DIED OF ILLNESSES RELATED TO THE FLU. MOST WERE OVER THE AGE OF 65. THE NUMBER OF CASES HAS DROPPED, BUT THE VIRUS IS STILL CONSIDERED WIDESPREAD ACROSS PA.

STUDENTS CHARGED AFTER CHEERLEADER’S FALL

8 PENN STATE STUDENTS ARE FACING CHARGES OF FURNISHING ALCOHOL TO MINORS IN CONNECTION WITH THE OCTOBER FALL OF 19 YEAR OLD CHEERLEADER PAIGE RAQUE WHO FELL FROM A 5TH FLOOR WINDOW AT THE CALDER COMMONS APARTMENT BUILDING. 4 CHEERLEADERS AND 1 DANCE TEAM MEMBER HAVE BEEN DISMISSED FROM THEIR TEAMS AND WILL ALSO FACE POTENTIAL SANCTIONS FROM THE OFFICE OF STUDENT CONDUCT. RAQUE CONTINUES HER RECOVERY AT HOME IN KENTUCKY.

INMATE’S MURDER TRIAL SCHEDULED

CAMBRIA COUNTY PROSECUTORS HAVE DECIDED NOT TO SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY AGAINST 21 YEAR OLD WILLIAM CRAMER WHO IS ACCUSED OF STRANGLING HIS CELLMATE AUGUST 4TH IN THE COUNTY PRISON. CRAMER HAS PLEADED NOT GUILTY IN THE DEATH OF 28-YEAR-OLD WILLIAM SHERRY. POLICE BELIEVE HE USED A TORN BEDSHEET TO STRANGLE SHERRY AND THEN TRIED TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE SUICIDE. CRAMER WAS A STATE PRISONER WHO WAS BEING HELD AT THE COUNTY FACILITY TEMPORARILY. JURY SELECTION IS SET FOR APRIL 4TH.

GUN THIEVES CAUGHT

EARLY MONDAY MORNING, BURGLARS USED A CADILLAC TO SMASH THEIR WAY INTO SAXTON OUTDOOR SUPPLY AND STEAL A LARGE QUANTITY OF HANDGUNS. POLICE IN BALTIMORE YESTERDAY SPOTTED MICHAEL FAIRCLOTH AND GARRETT SHERLOCK AND CHASED THEM UNTIL THEIR CAR CRASHED. BOTH ARE 25 YEARS OLD AND ARE FROM SAXTON IN BEDFORD COUNTY. THEY SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES AND ARE NOW FACING A LONG LIST OF FEDERAL WEAPONS CHARGES. MORE THAN 2 DOZEN STOLEN GUNS WERE RECOVERED.
    
PHONY MONEY

ROARING SPRING POLICE SAY 2 MALES AND 1 FEMALE ARE FACING CHARGES AFTER THEY PASSED COUNTERFEIT BILLS AT THE SUBWAY AND BURGER KING RESTAURANTS ON SUNDAY. GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP POLICE HAD A VEHICLE DESCRIPTION AND A PARTIAL MARYLAND LICENSE PLATE NUMBER WHICH THEY USED TO TRACK DOWN THE SUSPECTS. COPS FOUND A LARGE SUM OF CASH AND MORE FAKE CURRENCY IN THE CAR ALONG WITH RECEIPTS FROM A NUMBER OF OTHER BUSINESSES IN BLAIR AND SURROUNDING COUNTIES.

GAS PRICES UP AGAIN

WE ARE DIGGING A LITTLE DEEPER FOR GAS MONEY THESE DAYS. TRIPLE A FUEL GAUGE SAYS WESTERN PA PRICES INCREASED A NICKEL TO AN AVERAGE OF $3.55 THIS WEEK. IN THE ALTOONA AREA, DRIVERS SAW A JUMP YESTERDAY FROM $3.59 TO $3.65. TODAY’S NATIONAL AVERAGE IS $3.36. THAT’S A NICKEL MORE THAN ONE WEEK AGO AND 7 CENTS MORE THAN ONE MONTH AGO, BUT IT REMAINS 7 CENTS CHEAPER THAN THE AVERAGE PRICE ONE YEAR AGO.
