GUILTY PLEA IN CHILD’S DEATH

IN BEDFORD COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, 23 YEAR OLD CORY CHILDERS OF BEDFORD PLEADED GUILTY TO DRUNK DRIVING FOR THE APRIL 2012 CRASH THAT KILLED 5-YEAR-OLD JULYEN WINTERS OF MARYLAND. THE BOY WAS RIDING IN A MINI-VAN STRUCK BY CHILDERS’ CAR IN BEDFORD TOWNSHIP. CHILDERS AND THE MINI-VAN DRIVER BOTH HAD MAJOR INJURIES. A 2 YEAR OLD WAS ALSO HURT. CHILDERS…WHO HAS A PREVIOUS D-U-I ON HIS RECORD…FACES UP TO 10 YEARS IN JAIL AND HE’S SCHEDULED TO BE SENTENCED ON MARCH 22ND.

STILL LOOKING FOR HIT AND RUN DRIVER

STATE POLICE SET UP AN INFORMATIONAL CHECKPOINT EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING ALONG I-99 SOUTH NEAR THE TOFTREES EXIT IN STATE COLLEGE. IT HAD BEEN EXACTLY ONE WEEK SINCE A HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER KILLED 32 YEAR OLD SHERRY HOUTZ OF BELLEFONTE. TROOPERS STOPPED MOTORISTS AND ASKED THEM IF THEY HAD ANY INFORMATION.

WITHDRAWING INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER PLEA?

RATHER THAN BEING SENTENCED YESTERDAY, 51 YEAR OLD RANDY FOOR OF BEDFORD ASKED TO WITHDRAW HIS GUILTY PLEA TO INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER FOR SHOVING HIS FRIEND, 49 YEAR OLD DENNIS SPRIGG OF MANNS CHOICE DURING AN AUGUST PARTY. SPRIGG FELL AND HIT HIS HEAD ON THE SIDEWALK. HE DIED 7 WEEKS LATER. THE JUDGE WILL HOLD A HEARING MARCH 4TH TO DETERMINE IF FOOR CAN BREAK HIS DEAL WITH PROSECUTORS AND GO TO TRIAL.

ACCUSED KIDNAPPER SURRENDERS

SHANE JOHNSON OF JOHNSTOWN TURNED HIMSELF INTO POLICE LAST NIGHT. HE’S ACCUSED OF TRYING TO KIDNAP AN OAKHURST HOMES WOMAN SUNDAY NIGHT. AUTHORITIES SAY JOHNSON HAD A GUN WHEN HE DEMANDED MONEY AND DRUGS. THE WOMAN DROVE HIM TO A RELATIVE’S HOME TO GET MORE MONEY AND THAT’S WHEN SHE ESCAPED. JOHNSON IS NOW IN JAIL ON 100-THOUSAND DOLLARS BOND.

FIRE IN GIRLS’ BATHROOM

ALTOONA SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICIALS SAY A SMALL FIRE OCCURRED IN A GIRLS BATHROOM AT THE JUNIOR HIGH TUESDAY MORNING. ALL STUDENTS WERE SAFELY EVACUATED AND THE FIRE DID NOT SPREAD. THE FLAMES WERE OUT BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED. STUDENTS RETURNED TO CLASS A SHORT TIME LATER.

DISTRICT HIRES NEW SUPERINTENDENT

WITH A UNANIMOUS VOTE, THE ALTOONA AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT LAST NIGHT WELCOMED DR. THOMAS OTTO AS ITS NEW SUPERINTENDENT. HE WILL SUCCEED THE RETIRING DENNIS MURRAY IN JULY. OTTO IS CURRENTLY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE CLEARFIELD AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT, BUT HE TAUGHT IN ALTOONA FOR MANY YEARS. HIS 4 YEAR CONTRACT CALLS FOR A STARTING SALARY OF 141-THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR.
