DONATIONS FOR FIRE VICTIMS

3 YEAR OLD DARREL ETCHISON JUNIOR OF ALTOONA WAS KILLED WHEN HIS HOUSE WAS SET ON FIRE ALMOST 2 WEEKS AGO…AND HIS FUNERAL IS TODAY. A PUBLIC VIEWING WILL BE HELD FROM 9 TO 11 AT THE MYERS-SOMERS FUNERAL HOME IN ALTOONA AND A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL FOLLOW. DONATIONS ARE BEING COLLECTED FOR THE ETCHISON FAMILY AT M & T BANK ON PLEASANT VALLEY BOULEVARD.

AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE LOST THEIR HOMES ON THANKSGIVING DAY WHEN A MASSIVE FIRE BROKE OUT ALONG COLEMAN AVENUE IN THE MOXHAM SECTION OF JOHNSTOWN. SINCE THEN, SECOND CHANCE FIRE RECOVERY OF CAMBRIA COUNTY HAS BEEN COLLECTING DONATIONS FOR THE VICTIMS. WJAC REPORTS THAT, SINCE FRIDAY, THE GROUP HAS GROWN FROM 35 MEMBERS TO WELL OVER 200. SECOND CHANCE OFFICIALS SAY THEY HAVE RECEIVED ENOUGH CLOTHES BUT COULD USE MORE CLEANING SUPPLIES AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION, BUT IT MAY NEVER BE DETERMINED BECAUSE THERE’S NOT MUCH LEFT.

DEADLY HOLIDAY WEEKEND

STATE POLICE SAY 13 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 349 INJURED IN CRASHES ACROSS THE STATE DURING THE 5 DAY THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY PERIOD. TROOPERS INVESTIGATED 1-1-HUNDRED-24 WRECKS. 86 OF THEM WERE ALCOHOL RELATED INCLUDING 2 FATALITIES. DURING LAST YEAR'S THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY TRAVEL PERIOD, 10 PEOPLE DIED AND 326 OTHERS WERE INJURED IN 1-THOUSAND-7 CRASHES. THESE STATISTICS DO NOT INCLUDE ACCIDENTS REPORTED BY LOCAL POLICE OFFICERS.

DEER SEASON HEART ATTACKS

ON THE FIRST DAY OF DEER SEASON, 2 HUNTERS DIED OF APPARENT HEART ATTACKS IN SOMERSET COUNTY. 71 YEAR OLD ALLEN WEBB OF PAINT BORO WAS FOUND BY OTHERS IN HIS HUNTING PARTY IN GALLITZIN STATE FOREST. THE SECOND HUNTER, 66 YEAR OLD ROBERT GEORGE OF PORT SAINT LUCIE FLORIDA DIED IN SHADE TOWNSHIP. DEER SEASON CONTINUES THROUGH DECEMBER 8TH.

MISSING HUNTER

VOLUNTEERS AND AUTHORITIES SPENT HOURS YESTERDAY SEARCING FOR A MISSING HUNTER. 82 YEAR OLD GEORGE HAMMEL JUNIOR WAS LAST SEEN ABOUT 1PM NEAR WALNUT LANE IN THE BARRENS AREA OF HUSTON TOWNSHIP, NEAR ROARING SPRING. HAMMEL IS 5-FOOT-10 WITH A THIN BUILD.

FEW DETAILS ON JOHNSTOWN SHOOTING

JOHNSTOWN POLICE HAVE NOT RELEASED MANY MORE DETAILS ABOUT A SHOOTING THAT HAPPENED SATURDAY AFTERNOON. A MAN WAS SHOT AND SERIOUSLY INJURED WHILE BREAKING INTO A SECOND-FLOOR APARTMENT ON FRONHEISER STREET IN THE UPPER HORNERSTOWN SECTION. DISTRICT ATTORNEY KELLY CALLIHAN SAYS IT’S TOO EARLY IN THE INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE WAS JUSTIFIED. THE VICTIM IS STILL HOSPITALIZED AND HIS NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED. POLICE HAVE NOT YET BEEN ABLE TO INTERVIEW HIM.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

FORMER PENN STATE PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER IS HOPING TO HAVE ALL THE CHARGES AGAINST HIM DROPPED. ACCORDING TO THE HARRISBURG PATRIOT NEWS, HIS ATTORNEYS HAVE ASKED JUDGE BARRY FEUDALE TO TOSS CHARGES OF OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE, PERJURY, CHILD ENDANGERMENT, AND ADDITIONAL COUNTS…SAYING PROSECUTORS WRONGLY RELIED ON TESTIMONY OF FORMER UNIVERSITY COUNSEL CYNTHIA BALDWIN. FORMER VICE PRESIDENT GARY SCHULTZ AND FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CURLEY HAVE FILED SIMILAR MOTIONS.

ALTOONA’S ACT 47 FINANCIAL RECOVERY

ALTOONA MAYOR BILL SCHIRF SAYS THE ACT 47 RECOVERY PLAN CONTAINS SOME GOOD IDEAS, BUT CITY MANAGER JOE WEAKLAND AND OTHERS THINK THERE ARE SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS. THE ACT 47 COORDINATOR UNVEILED THE 326 PAGE PLAN LAST WEEK…AND MONDAY NIGHT COUNCIL DISCUSSED 27 PAGES OF ISSUES, INCLUDING PROPOSED TAX HIKES. CITY LEADERS ALSO DON’T WANT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO TAKE OVER AMED AMBULANCE SERVICE. COUNCIL MEETS TONIGHT AT 7 TO INTRODUCE THE 2013 BUDGET…AND AN ACT 47 PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD WEDNESDAY AT 5:30 AT THE DEVORRIS DOWNTOWN CENTER.

RICK SANTORUM SAYS HE MIGHT MAKE ANOTHER RUN FOR THE WHITE HOUSE FOUR YEARS FROM NOW.  THE FORMER REPUBLICAN SENATOR FROM PENNSYLVANIA TOLD CNN HE IS "OPEN TO THAT POSSIBILITY" IN 2016.  SANTORUM WAS AMONG SEVERAL GOP CANDIDATES COMPETING WITH EVENTUAL PARTY NOMINEE MITT ROMNEY.   

WHO’S RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR?

IT'S GAME ON FOR THE 2014 PENNSYLVANIA GUBERNATORIAL RACE. FORMER D-E-P SECRETARY JOHN HANGER IS SCHEDULED TO MAKE HIS CAMPAIGN OFFICIAL WITH FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENTS IN HARRISBURG AND PHILADELPHIA ON WEDNESDAY AND A VISIT TO PITTSBURGH ON THURSDAY. THE DEMOCRATIC FIELD IS EXPECTED TO BE BROAD. IT REMAINS TO BE SEEN IF REPUBLICAN GOVEROR TOM CORBETT WILL BE CHALLENGED IN THE PRIMARY. PRIOR TO SUPERSTORM SANDY, HIS APPROVAL STOOD AT 36-PERCENT.

HIGHER ELECTRIC BILLS

PENELEC CUSTOMERS WILL SEE HIGHER BILLS STARTING SATURDAY. FIRST ENERGY CORPORATION SAYS THE RESIDENTIAL RATE WILL INCREASE BY A LITTLE OVER 7 CENTS PER KILOWATT HOUR. THE AVERAGE RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER’S BILL WILL JUMP FROM $92.35 TO $96.88.
