FATAL TRAIN ACCIDENT

CAMBRIA COUNTY AUTHORITIES HAVE RELEASED THE NAME OF THE PEDESTRIAN KILLED BY A TRAIN AT A CROSSING IN PORTAGE TOWNSHIP EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING. 32 YEAR OLD MICHAEL PAWVLEK OF PORTAGE WAS WALKING BETWEEN THE TRACKS DURING THE SNOWSTORM. CORONER DENNIS KWIATKOWSKI SAYS THE TOXICOLOGY REPORT WILL TAKE ABOUT 2 MONTHS. NORFOLK SOUTHERN IS ALSO INVESTIGATING.

PRISONER THREATENED TO BLOW UP ALTOONA BUILDING

STATE PRISONER DANIEL LOPEZ…BEING HELD IN INDIANA COUNTY…IS FACING TERRORISTIC THREATS CHARGES FOR ALLEGEDLY SENDING A BOMB THREAT TO THE STATE PROBATION AND PAROLE DEPARTMENT. THE 2009 LETTER SAID THE ALTOONA DISTRICT OFFICE WOULD BE BLOWN UP WITH C-4, BUT NO EXPLOSIVES WERE FOUND. INVESTIGATORS TRACKED LOPEZ THROUGH THE TYPEWRITER RIBBON. HE’S SERVING TIME FOR A 2008 ROBBERY IN ERIE COUNTY. LOPEZ IS NOW IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON WITH A PRELIMINARY HEARING SCHEDULED TUESDAY.

MAN ACCUSED OF MAKING THREATS

33 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER WALTON OF ALTOONA ALLEGEDLY THREATENED TO SHOOT HIS CO-WORKERS AND RUN DOWN SCHOOLCHILDREN WITH A TRUCK…AND HIS PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SET FOR TODAY. POLICE SAY WALTON WAS RECENTLY FIRED FROM N-P-C IN CLAYSBURG DUE TO ERRATIC BEHAVIOR AND HE HAS A LARGE QUANTITY OF FIREARMS. WALTON IS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON ON A HALF-MILLION DOLLARS BOND.

ONE JAILED/ONE HOSPITALIZED

A FLORIDA MAN IS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON ON 10-THOUSAND DOLLARS BOND FOLLOWING A BAR FIGHT IN ALTOONA EARLY WEDNESDAY. POLICE TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR 26 YEAR OLD BRYSON GLUNT JUNIOR WAS ARRESTED IN AN ALLEY NEAR AJAY’S BAR ON MAPLE AVENUE. HE REPORTEDLY THREW THE MAN TO THE FLOOR AND THREW A TABLE ON HIM, BREAKING HIS HIP. THE VICTIM HAAD BEEN TRYING TO BREAK UP AN ALTERCATION BETWEEN GLUNT AND OTHER PATRONS WHEN HE WAS ATTACKED. A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED WEDNESDAY.

SENTENCING FOR CROSS-BURNER

A FEDERAL JUDGE HAS SENTENCED RYAN HELD OF PHILIPSBURG TO ONE YEAR AND A DAY IN PRISON FOR ETHNIC INTIMIDATION AGAINST A CLEARFIELD COUNTY WOMAN. AUTHORITIES SAY HELD BURNED A CROSS NEAR THE VICTIM'S WOODLAND HOUSE IN 2010. HE WAS TRYING TO INTIMIDATE HER AND HER AFRICAN-AMERICAN FRIEND.

PRISON WILL BE HUB

THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT THE NEWLY-CONSTRUCTED PRISON IN BENNER TOWNSHIP WILL SERVE AS THE TRANSPORTATION HUB FOR PENNSYLVANIA’S JAILS. STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS SAY BUSLOADS OF INMATES BEING TRANSPORTED EVERY DAY FROM ONE STATE PRISON FACILITY TO ANOTHER WILL MAKE PIT STOPS IN CENTRE COUNTY…MAKING TRANSITIONS EASIER AND CUTTING DOWN WEAR-AND-TEAR ON BUSES. ABOUT 900 INMATES ARE MOVED ACROSS THE STATE EACH WEEK. BENNER STATE PRISON WILL HAVE 2-THOUSAND INMATES AND MORE THAN 500 STAFF ON BOARD BY THE END OF JUNE.

SEQUESTRATION MAY HURT PENN STATE

PENN STATE OFFICIALS TELL THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES THAT THE U-S GOVERNMENT SEQUESTRATION COULD MEAN 30-MILLION DOLLARS OR MORE IN FUNDING CUTS FOR THE UNIVERSITY. THE 85 BILLION IN ACROSS-THE-BOARD CUTS STARTED FRIDAY, AND ARE EXPECTED TO RESULT IN LAYOFFS OF FEDERAL WORKERS, DELAYS IN AIR TRAFFIC, AND REDUCED FOOD INSPECTIONS. AT PENN STATE, FACULTY ARE AWARDED GRANTS FROM ORGANIZATIONS FUNDED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THOSE GRANTS COULD BE A THING OF THE PAST.THAT COULD MEAN LAYOFFS OR A LOSS OF RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AND ASSISTANTSHIPS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS. RESEARCH CENTERS MAY ALSO HAVE TO BE DOWNSIZED. THE AID CUTS GO INTO EFFECT JULY 1ST IF THE SEQUESTRATION IS NOT REVERSED.
