MORE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST BROTHER STEPHEN

A WOMAN HAS NOW COME FORWARD CLAIMING SHE WAS REPEATEDLY SEXUALLY ABUSED BY FRANCISCAN FRIAR STEPHEN BAKER STARTING WHEN SHE WAS 15 AND ATTENDING JOHNSTOWN’S BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL. BAKER WORKED AS AN ATHLETIC TRAINER…AND ATTORNEY RICHARD SERBIN, WHO REPRESENTS MULTIPLE PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST BAKER, RELEASED A STATEMENT YESTERDAY SAYING THE GIRL TRUSTED BAKER TO TREAT HER INJURIES AND HE MOLESTED HER INSTEAD. SERBIN’S STATEMENT ALSO SAYS HE BELIEVES OTHER FEMALE ATHLETES AND CHEERLEADERS WERE ABUSED, POSSIBLY EVEN SOME MIDDLE SCHOOL CHILDREN WHO WERE PARTICIPATING IN PARISH SPONSORED PROGRAMS. BAKER COMMITTED SUICIDE IN JANUARY AT ST. BERNADINE’S MONASTERY IN HOLLIDAYSBURG.

ONE DEAD/2 INJURED IN BLAST

AUTHORITIES IN CAMBRIA COUNTY HAVE RELEASED NEW DETAILS IN THE HOUSE EXPLOSION AND SUICIDE OF 40 YEAR OLD BRAD KOLLAR OF HASTINGS. HE SET OFF A BLAST AT A HOME ON KEMPSHIRE ROAD IN CLEARFIELD TOWNSHIP TUESDAY MORNING, KILLING HIMSELF AND CRITICALLY INJURING 44 YEAR OLD BILL SHANER WHO REMAINS AT ALLEGHENY GENERAL HOSPITAL IN PITTSBURGH. SHANER’S TEENAGE SON WAS EXPECTED TO BE RELEASED FROM ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM YESTERDAY. DISTRICT ATTORNEY KELLY CALLIHAN RELEASED COURT DOCUMENTS AND A RECORDED JAIL CONVERSATION BETWEEN KOLLAR AND AN UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN. KOLLAR SAYS THAT HE TRIED BLOWING HIMSELF UP LAST SUMMER BUT IT DIDN'T WORK. 

KOLLAR WAS SCHEDULED FOR SENTENCING TUESDAY ON CHARGES OF OPERATING AN ILLEGAL CHOP-SHOP AND METH LAB. PROSECUTORS TRIED TO HAVE HIS BOND REVOKED, BUT THE JUDGE REFUSED. ACQUAINTANCES OF KOLLAR SAID HE BELIEVED SHANER SNITCHED ON HIM, LEADING TO HIS ARREST.

TEENS PLEADS GUILTY IN FRIEND’S DEATH

16 YEAR OLD JESSE MCELHINNEY OF ALTOONA DIED THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS WHEN HE WAS ACCIDENTALLY SHOT BY HIS 17 YEAR OLD FRIEND. THE OTHER TEEN IS NOW 18, BUT HE PLEADED GUILTY YESTERDAY AS A JUVENILE TO CHARGES INCLUDING INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER. THE ALTOONA MIRROR SAYS HE WILL ALSO HELP THE BLAIR COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE MAKE AN EDUCATIONAL VIDEO WARNING OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT THE DANGER OF GUNS. 5 YEARS AFTER COMPLETING HIS PROBATION, THE TEEN’S RECORD WILL BE EXPUNGED.

CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE

A BIG CROWD TURNED OUT AT SPRING COVE MIDDLE SCHOOL LAST NIGHT FOR A GAME COMMISSION PRESENTATION ON CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE. 3 LOCAL DEER KILLED LAST HUNTING SEASON TESTED POSITIVE. OFFICIALS SAY C-W-D ALWAYS GETS WORSE AND IT SPREADS UNTIL IT PRACTICALLY DESTROYS THE DEER POPULATION. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT IT AFFECTS HUMANS.

PRIVATIZING LIQUOR SALES

THE STATE HOUSE COULD MAKE A HISTORIC VOTE TODAY TO PHASE OUT STATE-OWNED LIQUOR STORES. HOUSE BILL 790 WILL CREATE 12-HUNDRED WINE AND SPIRIT LICENSES AND WILL GIVE BEER DISTRIBUTORS THE FIRST CHANCE TO PURCHASE ONE. AFTER A YEAR, THE REMAINING LICENSES WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. THE BILL ALSO ALLOWS GROCERY STORES TO SELL WINE AND BEER DISTRIBUTORS TO APPLY FOR EXPANDED LICENSES.

SELECTING PENN STATE PRESIDENT

PENN STATE STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF CAN GIVE INPUT INTO THE SEARCH FOR A NEW PRESIDENT. THE UNIVERSITY IS HOLDING 3 FORUMS THIS WEEK. THE FIRST 2 ARE TODAY…FROM 1 TO 2 IN THE HUB AUDITORIUM…AND FROM 6 TO 7 IN “105 FORUM.” THE FINAL SESSION IS FROM 2:15 TO 3:15 FRIDAY IN PATERNO LIBRARY’S FOSTER AUDITORIUM. IT WILL BE BROADCAST ON-LINE SO THOSE AT BRANCH CAMPUSES CAN PARTICIPATE. PENN STATE PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON WILL RETIRE BY JUNE 30TH 2014. THE POOL OF CANDIDATES WILL BE SCREENED AND NARROWED DOWN BY A COMMITTEE COMPOSED OF FACULTY AND STAFF, INCLUDING LADY LIONS COACH COQUESE WASHINGTON. THOSE WHO MAKE THE CUT WILL BE FORWARDED TO THE TRUSTEE PRESIDENTIAL SELECTION COUNCIL, AND THE MEMBERS WILL FURTHER NARROW DOWN THE LIST.
