MORE DETAILS ON FATAL CRASH -

19-YEAR-OLD DEREK WHITSEL HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS THE DRIVER WHO DIED SUNDAY NIGHT IN A 3-VEHICLE CRASH ON ROUTE 522, NORTH OF COVERED BRIDGE ROAD IN CROMWELL TOWNSHIP, HUNTINGDON COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY 71-YEAR-OLD JAMES SAYLOR ATTEMPTED TO PASS A CAR AND HIT WHITSEL’S TRUCK HEAD-ON. THE CAR THEN ALSO CRASHED INTO WHITSEL’S TRUCK. POLICE ARE CONTINUING THEIR INVESTIGATION.

 

POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING HANDGUN -

ACCORDING TO TODAY’S ALTOONA MIRROR, STATE POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR A MISSING HANDGUN THAT WAS REGISTERED TO ONE OF THE VICTIMS WHO WAS KILLED IN A DECEMBER 21ST SHOOTING IN GEESEYTOWN, BLAIR COUNTY. THE GUN IS A 44-CALIBER STURM, RUGER & CO. REGISTERED TO 38-YEAR-OLD WILLIAM H. “BILL” RHODES. RHODES WAS ONE OF THE PEOPLE SHOT BY JEFFREY LEE MICHAEL BEFORE MICHAEL WAS KILLED IN A SHOOTOUT WITH POLICE. RHODES FAMILY CAN’T FIND THE GUN, WHICH REMAINS MISSING THREE MONTHS AFTER THE INCIDENT. STATE POLICE IN HOLLIDAYSBURG HAVE ASKED ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE INFORMATION TO CONTACT THEM AT 696-6100.

 

WOMEN ASSAULTED IN STATE COLLEGE -

 TWO MEN WERE ARRESTED AND ACCUSED OF ATTACKING AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTING TWO WOMEN IN STATE COLLEGE EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. WJAC-TV REPORTS THAT RICARDO CUEVAS-JIMENEZ AND GALDINO SALAS ABURTO OFFERED THE WOMEN A RIDE BACK TO THEIR CAMPUS RESIDENCE..BUT WOULDN’T LET THEM OUT OF THE CAR WHEN THEY ARRIVED. THE WOMEN TOLD POLICE THAT ABURTO ASSAULTED THEM. ACCORDING TO POLICE, THE WOMEN WERE RESCUED WHEN OFFICERS SPOTTED THE VEHICLE IN A PARKING LOT.

 

JOHNSTOWN MAN ACCUSED IN SHOOTING

A JOHNSTOWN MAN WILL STAND TRIAL ON CHARGES HE KILLED A MAN IN THE MOXHAM NEIGHBORHOOD OF JOHNSTOWN LAST MONTH.  POLICE SAY SAY SHALIK GREEN KILLED JOSHUA PRICE.  PRICE WAS SHOT AT LEAST FOUR TIMES IN A HOME ON CYPRESS AVENUE.  POLICE SAY GREEN DID NOT HAVE A PERMIT FOR THE GUN THAT KILLED PRICE.

 

SOMERSET COUNTY CONTRACTOR SUED -

A SOMERSET COUNTY CONTRACTOR IS BEING SUED BY THE FEDS FOR $900,000.  A CIVIL SUIT FILED YESTERDAY IS ACCUSING KUCHERA DEFENSE SYSTEMS AND ITS OWNERS OF TRYING TO DEFRAUD THE U.S. GOVERNMENT BY ILLEGALLY OBTAINING LUCRATIVE CONTRACTS.  THE FEDS CLAIM KUCHERA GAVE KICKBACKS TO THE CAMPAIGN OF LATE JOHNSTOWN REPRESENTATIVE JOHN MURTHA.  PRIOR TO HIS DEATH IN 2010, MURTHA DENIED ANY CONNECTION BETWEEN DONATIONS TO HIS CAMPAIGN AND CONTRACT AWARDS.

 

GOVERNOR WANTS HIGHER GAS TAX -

 GOVERNOR CORBETT WANTS TO RAISE THE GASOLINE TAX BUT NOT BY A LARGE ENOUGH MARGIN FOR SOME DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKERS.  THE GOVERNOR'S PLAN WOULD CUT THE LIQUID FUELS TAX BY TWO CENTS, WHILE ELIMINATING A CAP ON THE OIL COMPANY FRANCHISE TAX, PUSHING IT UP NEARLY 29-CENTS OVER FIVE YEARS.  THE END RESULT WOULD AMOUNT TO A PER GALLON INCREASE OF ABOUT FIVE CENTS A YEAR DURING EACH OF THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.  ALLEGHENY COUNTY REPRESENTATIVE JOSEPH MARKOSEK SAYS THERE'S NO NEED FOR A TAX REDUCTION ON LIQUID FUELS.

 

HEARING FOR SANDUSKY VICTIM -

A federal judge hOLDS a hearing TODAY IN PHILADELPHIA TO HEAR arguments about delaying the lawsuit filed by Jerry Sandusky’S SO-CALLED VICTIM 6 WHO CLAIMS THE FORMER COACH showered with him in 1998. Lawyers for Penn State and The Second Mile SAY THE SUIT SHOULD BE delayed UNTIL AFTER THE CRIMINAL CASES INVOLVING former university leaders Graham Spanier, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz. LAWYERS FOR THE VICTIM SAY HE’S WAITED LONG ENOUGH, BUT Judges have delayed all the other civil lawsuits brought by men claiming to be abused by Sandusky.

 

DUBOIS  MARINE HONORED -

 GOVERNOR CORBETT HAS ORDERED THAT ALL UNITED STATES AND PENNSYLVANIA  FLAGS BE FLOWN AT HALF-STAFF AT THE STATE CAPITAL AND COMMONWEALTH FACILITIES IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY ON THURSDAY IN HONOR OF A DUBOIS MARINE. 19-YEAR-OLD MARINE LANCE CORPORAL JOSHUA MARTINO DIED MARCH 18TH IN NEVADA DURING A TRAINING OPERATION. HIS FUNERAL IS ON THURSDAY. FLAGS SHOULD BE FLOWN AT HALF-STAFF UNTIL SUNDOWN ON THURSDAY.

 

JUSTICE RESIGNS -

A CONVICTED PENNSYLVANIA SUPREME COURT JUSTICE IS STEPPING DOWN. IN A LETTER TO GOVERNOR CORBETT, JUSTICE JOAN ORIE-MELVIN TOLD THE GOVERNOR SHE WOULD RESIGN FROM THE BENCH EFFECTIVE MAY 1ST. MELVIN HAS BEEN SUSPENDED FROM THE COURT SINCE AUGUST. SHE AND HER SISTER, JANINE ORIE, WERE CONVICTED LAST MONTH OF MIS-USING STATE-PAID STAFFERS TO DO CAMPAIGN WORK AND FOUND GUILTY OF THEFT OF SERVICES, CONSPIRACY AND MISAPPROPRIATION OF STATE PROPERTY. SHE WILL BE SENTENCED ON MAY 7TH.

 

CAUSE OF BUS CRASH STILL UNKNOWN -

IT WILL BE SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE STATE POLICE KNOW THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT THAT KILLED THE SETON HILL WOMEN'S LACROSSE COACH, HER UNBORN BABY, AND THE BUS DRIVER. TOXICOLOGY TEST RESULTS HAVE BEEN RETURNED … AND THEY ARE NEGATIVE FOR DRUGS AND NEGATIVE FOR ALCOHOL.  SIXTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD ANTHONY GUAETTA OF JOHNSTOWN WAS DRIVING THE TEAM TO MILLERSVILLE WHEN HE LOST CONTROL OF THE BUS ON THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE.
