DEATH AT SKI RESORT

VERY FEW DETAILS HAVE BEEN RELEASED, BUT STATE POLICE IN SOMERSET COUNTY ARE REPORTEDLY INVESTIGATING A DEATH AT HIDDEN VALLEY SKI RESORT. TROOPERS SAY THE VICTIM WAS A YOUNGER PERSON AND THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS A SUSPICIOUS DEATH. AUTOPSY RESULTS ARE PENDING.

NO DECISION ON CHARGES IN FATAL SHOOTING

ALTOONA POLICE MET WITH OFFICIALS FROM THE BLAIR COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE ON FRIDAY, BUT THEY HAVE NOT DECIDED WHETHER TO FILE CHARGES AGAINST THE FRIEND WHO SHOT AND KILLED 16 YEAR OLD JESSE MCELHINNEY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. A DETERMINATION SHOULD BE MADE LATER THIS WEEK. MEANWHILE, A TRUST FUND HAS BEEN SET UP AT FIRST SUMMIT BANK TO HELP COVER FUNERAL EXPENSES.

FIRE DISPLACES FAMILY

THE RED CROSS IS ASSISTING AN ALTOONA FAMILY OF 3 WHO WERE DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOUSE BY FIRE SATURDAY NIGHT. THE BLAZE BROKE OUT ABOUT 11PM AT A MOBILE HOME AT 104 EAST TEMPLE AVENUE IN GREENWOOD. AUTHORITIES HAVEN’T RELEASED ANY MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE FIRE.

ROBBERY IN CRESSON

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY, CRESSON TOWNSHIP POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR THE THIEF WHO STOLE TOBACCO PRODUCTS FROM THE PUFF ‘N SNUFF STORE SUNDAY AFTERNOON. HE ENTERED THE STORE AROUND 3PM SUNDAY AND DID NOT DISPLAY A WEAPON. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION SHOULD CONTACT THE POLICE.

THE FIRST NIGHT STATE COLLEGE GRAND PROCESSION AND 5-K RESOLUTION RUN ARE TONIGHT AT 6:30 AND THAT MEANS SOME TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS. THE PARADE STEPS OFF AT 6:30 FROM ST. ANDREW’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH ON WEST FOSTER AVENUE AND THE ROUTE INCLUDES PORTIONS OF COLLEGE AVENUE AND SOUTH ALLEN STREET. IT WRAPS UP AT SIDNEY FRIEDMAN PARK. THE 5K RESOLUTION RUN ALSO BEGINS AT 6:30 AT THE CORNER OF COLLEGE AVENUE AND SOUTH ALLEN STREET. THE RACE ROUTE WILL TRAVEL TO BURROWES STREET…CURTIN ROAD…BIGLER ROAD…POLLOCK ROAD…FRASER ROAD…AND SHORTLIDGE ROAD TO THE END OF LOCUST LANE. FIRST NIGHT STATE COLLEGE IS A FAMILY-ORIENTED, ALCOHOL-FREE EVENT THAT CONTINUES ALL DAY LONG ALONG SOUTH ALLEN STREET AND AT OTHER DOWNTOWN LOCATIONS. ICE SCULPTORS WILL BE CREATING THEIR MASTERPIECES TODAY FROM 10 TO 9 ALONG SOUTH ALLEN STREET AND THE ONE BLOCK ICE SCULPTURE EXHIBIT IS OPEN THROUGH TOMORROW. NO MORE SMOKING AT ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM. STARTING TODAY, JOB APPLICANTS WILL BE SCREENED FOR TOBACCO USE AND THOSE WHO FAIL WILL NOT BE HIRED. THE HOSPITAL ALREADY PROHIBITS SMOKING INSIDE THEIR BUILDING AND ALL MEDICAL OUT-PATIENT CENTERS. SMOKERS WHO WORK THERE ARE OFFERED PROGRAMS TO HELP THEM TRY TO QUIT.
