LAWSUIT FILED AFTER DEADLY BUS WRECK

SETON HILL FRESHMAN LACROSSE PLAYER AMANDA MICHALSKI SUFFERED MULTIPLE FRACTURES AND INTERNAL INJURIES THIS MONTH WHEN HER TEAM’S BUS VEERED OFF THE TURNPIKE AND CRASHED NEAR CARLISLE…AND NOW SHE IS SUING THE BUS COMPANY. LAWYERS SAY THE DRIVER FOR MLAKER TRANSPORTATION WAS NEGLIGENT AND RECKLESS. 61 YEAR OLD ANTHONY GUAETTA OF JOHNSTOWN AND THE TEAM’S COACH, 30-YEAR-OLD KRISTINA QUIGLEY, WERE KILLED ALONG WITH HER UNBORN SON. MICHALSKI IS IN GOOD CONDITION AT PENN STATE’S HERSHEY MEDICAL CENTER. QUIGLEY'S FUNERAL IS TODAY IN BALTIMORE.

SENTENCING FOR DEADLY DRIVER

IN BEDFORD COUNTY COURT TODAY, 23 YEAR OLD CORY CHILDERS OF BEDFORD COULD GET UP TO 10 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON. HE PLEADED GUILTY TO DRUNK DRIVING FOR THE APRIL 2012 CRASH THAT KILLED 5-YEAR-OLD JULYEN WINTERS OF MARYLAND. THE BOY WAS RIDING IN A MINI-VAN STRUCK BY CHILDERS’ CAR IN BEDFORD TOWNSHIP. CHILDERS AND THE MINI-VAN DRIVER BOTH HAD MAJOR INJURIES. A 2 YEAR OLD WAS ALSO HURT. CHILDERS HAS A PREVIOUS D-U-I ON HIS RECORD.

JAIL TIME FOR ARSONIST?

26 YEAR OLD WADE RHODES OF MARTINSBURG WILL LIKELY BE SENTENCED TO AT LEAST 8 YEARS IN PRISON TODAY. EARLIER THIS MONTH, HE PLEADED GUILTY TO LEADING A BEDFORD COUNTY ARSON RING. RHODES AND 6 FRIENDS WERE ACCUSED OF STARTING FIRES IN 2011 AND 12 INCLUDING ONE AT BREEZEWOOD’S ABANDONED PENN AIRE MOTEL AND A BLAZE THAT CAUSED ONE MILLION DOLLARS DAMAGE AT A FARM. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS HURT. RHODES’ CO-DEFENDANTS ARE ALSO FACING JAIL TIME.

HELP FOR ALTOONA

THE CITY OF ALTOONA WAS DECLARED FINANCIALLY DISTRESSED LAST YEAR, BUT IT’S NOW GETTING MORE THAN ONE HALF MILLION DOLLARS FROM THE STATE TO HELP WITH THE RECOVERY. THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT YESTERDAY ANNOUNCED THE AWARD OF A 519-THOUSAND DOLLAR MUNICIPALITIES FINANCIAL RECOVERY ACT GRANT. IT WILL SUPPORT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES THAT WILL HELP TO REDUCE COSTS AND INCREASE TAX AND REVENUE COLLECTIONS.

PRIVATIZING LIQUOR SALES

THE STATE HOUSE MADE HISTORY YESTERDAY, VOTING TO PRIVATIZE ALCOHOL SALES IN T HE STATE. THE VOTE WAS 105 TO 90. THE STATE PLANS TO SELL 12-HUNDRED LICENSES AND ALLOW THE NEW OWNERS TO SELL WINE, BEER AND ALCOHOL. HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER MIKE TURZAI SAYS THE MEASURE ALSO RETAINS TIGHT REGULATORY CONTROL…STRENGTHENS LAW ENFORCEMENT …CLAMPS DOWN ON UNDERAGE DRINKING… PROMOTES EDUCATION…AND RESPECTS CURRENT EMPLOYEES. THE BILL NOW GOES TO THE STATE SENATE.

AMTRAK SERVICE WILL SURVIVE

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT HE HAS REACHED AN AGREEMENT WITH AMTRAK ON A NEW FUNDING PLAN THAT WILL MAINTAIN RAIL PASSENGER SERVICE BETWEEN PITTSBURGH, HARRISBURG, AND PHILADELPHIA. PENNSYLVANIA’S CONTRIBUTION WILL BE 3-POINT-8 MILLION DOLLARS ANNUALLY. EARLIER THIS YEAR, AMTRAK REPRESENTATIVES SAID THEY NEEDED 5-POINT-7 MILLION A YEAR TO CONTINUE RUNNING THE LINE PAST OCTOBER WHEN A FEDERAL LAW TRANSFERRING SOME RAIL EXPENSES IS SET TO TAKE EFFECT.

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT CONGRESSMAN BILL SHUSTER AND OTHER STATE AND LOCAL OFFICIALS WILL UNVEIL PLANS THIS MORNING FOR WHAT’S BEING CALLED A NEW ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROJECT FOR BLAIR COUNTY. A NEWS CONFERENCE IS SET FOR 11AM AT THE DEVORRIS CENTER FOR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT. ALTOONA BLAIR COUNTY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION PRESIDENT MARTY MARASCO SAYS A NEW COMPANY WILL BE MAKING A SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT AND CREATING SOME GOOD PAYING TECHNICAL JOBS.
